Feige & Downey Jr. Talk Spidey

SPTM1Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter, Marvel’s Kevin Feige talked about Spidey’s comedic side:

In particular, Feige suggested that fans should expect more of the character’s comic book comedy in his next incarnation. “When he puts that mask on, in the comics, he has a non-stop wit that’s almost as troubling to the bad guys he fights as his webs and agility. We feel we haven’t really seen that yet.”

While speaking with IGN, Robert Downey Jr. (who plays Spider-Man villain Tony Stark – heh!) talked briefly about Spidey and his entrance into the MCU:

“However we spin it, we’re going to try and defy the expectation of what it would mean,” Downey said. “That’s been the directive from jump. But I think that a great job has been done with Spider-Man so far. And I think that the direction that Spider-Man is going to take is exactly what the fans would be delighted to see.”

@ #1 & #2 Yes. Exactly! Hopefully this transitions to the current comics & comic writers. Not an immature, wacky, zany, buffoon. So hope this is done right. I feel Spider-man has been misinterpreted in a downward spiral for quite a bit. (My opinion)

@ #1 "Witty is exactly what Spider-Man is supposed to be." - "Spider-Man’s story shouldn’t be a comedy, but he should definitely be a smartass when he’s wearing the mask." That's exactly right, Spider-Man responds skillfully with a witty sharp sense for irony and humor. He is not an immature wisecracking buffoon.

I tentatively feel good about this based on the fact that they used the word "wit." Witty is exactly what Spider-Man is supposed to be -- not hilarious or wacky, but witty, yes. Perfect. And also that they specified "when he puts that mask on." Spider-Man's story shouldn't be a comedy, but he should definitely be a smartass when he's wearing the mask.
