image1840537474barnesSorry, I could not find a picture of the said item.  As I was looking around in Barnes and Noble yesterday, I discovered these Marvel messenger bags near the comic/anime section.  It’s black with red trim, and it has Spider-man, Captain America, and the Hulk, I believe.  It seemed like a good deal for $14.95…however, as I did not write this information down while I was there, I could be completely wrong on the price.  I looked on the Barnes and Noble site and they have no information on it either.  It does exist!  It does have Spider-man on it!  That’s really all that should count!  It could also be useful for carrying books to school, or even to work…good luck!

BD Edit: I found a pic, is this what you saw?

Hulk Vs.

My friends, when it comes to comics and the superhero genre specifically I am a hard man to please.  So when I come across something so grand, so incredible, so splendiferous that it leaves me tight in the trousers I must share it with *ahem* “my peeps.”  And that is precisely what I have found in the new ‘Hulk Vs.’ cartoons newly released this past Tuesday on DVD and BluRay.  But… what the Hell does this have to do with Spidey, you ask?!  Keep your pants on, Webheads, we’ll get there before we’re done.

THUNDERBOLTS #128
WRITER: Andy Diggle
ARTIST: Roberto De La Torre
COLORIST: Frank Martin
LETTERER: Albert Deschensne

PLOT:
Norman Osborn and Victoria Hand meet the newly innaugerated President (drawn as Obama but never named), who invites Norman to fly on Air Force One and defend himself against certain allegations. Doc Samson’s aboard with a DVD of th
e Thunderbolt Mountain security footage detailing Norman’s Green Goblin rampage. Stalling, Norman twists Samson’s story against him, bringing up the ceramic blade he smuggled and accusing him of collaborating with the psychic saboteurs. When it comes time to play the footage, missiles destroy the fighter escorts and the new Thunderbolts, already inside Air Force One, strike. Yelena Belovna, Black Widow II, takes over the cockpit while the Irredeemable Ant-Man freaks Samson out with a tiny gamma emitter on his collar. The Ghost secures the DVD, setting the stage for the show-stopper: a decoy Green Goblin who explodes onto the plane.

THOUGHTS:
With Amazing Spider-Man #583 reviving 90s-style speculation with its tacked-on, five-page Obama story, I’m surprised Marvel promoted the President’s likeness here so little. After all, this full-length comic uses America’s leadership change in service to the company’s core storyline, so it could effectively pull new readers into the larger Marvel Universe. On the other hand, perhaps Marvel doesn’t want mainstream media focus directed at crass, violent Thunderbolts and has taken the right path in marketing a simple, non-challenging Spidey story to Obamaphiles who will never read what’s inside their ebay-gouged variant covers. Regardless, Andy Diggle knows how to do a timely comic right; he uses current events where they make sense in the course of Marvel’s ongoing plot without drawing attention away from the fiction, lapsing into diatribe, or making references that will date the book. Instead,

Welcome True Believers and Spiderophiles, as I, your great Clone Saga Apoligist/Spider-Girl fan am now embarking upamazingspider-manfamily03on my latest endeavor in reviewing, known to you as the AMAZING SPIDER-MAN FAMILY title, the officially official home of the newly titled, SPECTACULAR SPIDER-GIRL title. But that my friends will not start until Issue Five in March. Until then, I’m taking the reigns over from my esteemed friend, George Berryman. Now, until this point, this was the only title that was not regularly reviewed on this site. Berryman, to his credit, wrote the review out of protest, in fact, so much so that he personally sent the BND story pages back to Steve Wacker. I do want to address that I did indeed encourage him to do so. But in type of book this is, we’re getting all of the corners of the Spider-Man Universe, something that few other characters that are a single character, get. It’s something very unique to the Marvel. Thusly, I will insure that this title will be reviewed completely objectively. So no Mr. Wacker, I will NOT be send you my clipped pages of the BND’verse story. I will also be splitting the stories up. I also will largely not review the reprints in the back of the book. Why? It’s simply because those books should be better reviewed elsewhere. Besides, who wants to listen to me gush over SSM 200, or badger over ASM 300. So without further ado, I give you,

Say what you will about Marvel, but they know how to get news coverage. The Obama/Spidey comic is in it’s 4th printing and the media is loving the story. Here’s ABC’s Nightline with Spidey Editor Steve Wacker giving an interview.

Harry proposes to Lily in his own romantic style. Based on her co-worker’s suggestion Carlie goes to Peter and Vin’s apartment. The tracking device she has starts beeping and Carlie makes a shocking discovery in Vin’s room.

The Commentary

Going into this issue of Amazing Spider-Man I was fairly sure that Guggenheim was not going to resolve the two big plot threads that has been dangling for close to a year now in the first chapter. What I expected to find was an introductory chapter that thrust those two sub-plots forward with a few juicy clues thrown in for good measure that would probably turn out to be red herrings. This seems to be how comic book stories, especially (more…)
