From the pages of “Spectacular Spider-Man” issue 148. The future Venom gets told off by Spider-Man. Ok, there is a twist, it’s an Inferno zombie. Great Gerry Conway story, you should all pick it up!

There she blows! Like a giant whale breaking the water for air, the New Avengers review has resurfaced. You know what they say, better late than never. Sadly there’s not a whole lot of things that are better in this issue than the last one and we continue to follow an overworked Bendis rewriting the history of Avenger lore. If Bendis is Captain Ahab, then the Marvel Universe is the white whale he so desperately longs to sink with a great harpoon. What’s with all the Moby Dick references? Read the review below and you’ll find out.

Fantastic Fun Fact: In Amazing Spider-Man #659, the Future Foundation travel to the island that Dr. Doom sent them to in issue #5 of the original Fantastic Four series! Not that did the issue any favours mind you. Oh and to answer Brian Bradley’s question in last issue’s comments section, I live in Britian and thus spell things the way we Brits do! Not that really effects the review in any way, shape or form…

Marvel’s Senior Vice President of Publishing Tom Brevoort is talking about the Spider-Man marriage again on his formspring account. Here are some quotes.

Question: Hi Tom, I’m a huge spider-man fan! I love Pre-OMD and Post-OMD. i totally agree with the decision to get rid of the marriage! can you guys please stop responding to the people who don’t like it! it has been years! they obviously don’t get it!

Brevort: I’d like to, but there are just so many of them, and assuming that they come in with a relatively open mind, they’re just as entitled to a response as anyone else.

He then is asked about why he thinks Marvel married the couple back in 1987.

Question: What was “the moment of desperation” that caused the Spider-marriage to happen?

Brevort: The need to boost client sales on the newspaper strip, and the syndicate’s desire for a wedding.

And then he is asked why the devil had to be part of the breakup.

Question: I have no problem with “de-marrying” Peter Parker, but why was a satanic analog used and not someone like the Shaper of Worlds? Did Marvel want the fix to have a dark aspect to it?

Brevort: All of the iterations of this question boil down to, “Why did you do the story you did, instead of some other story?” And the answer to them all is, “Because this is the story we did, and we felt it was valid.”

According to TVLine, the current season of Law and Order: Criminal Intent will finish with an investigation of a musical that seems rather similar to Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark.  Is this intriguing or over the line?  Comment below.

Jealousy is not an attractive trait, but I have no reservations in saying that I can be a jealous person. Mainly, I’m super jealous of anyone with enough artistic talent (and cojones) to place their work on the inter-webs. Since my background in art didn’t really progress beyond my college days, I find myself pouring through the website DeviantArt, envious of all the artists talented enough to display their work for all the world to see. Well, in a new segment I’m calling Webs Weekly, I plan on bringing you Crawlspacers some of the best and brightest Spider-Man fan art I can find. DeviantArt is filled with some truly talented artists, both professional and amateur, and it has some wonderful pieces to showcase. So without further ado, I bring you the first installment. Enjoy, and join me in letting these gifted individuals know that their hard work is appreciated.

Spider-man by DennisBudd (left)

In addition to this sharp looking Spidey piece, Dennis also has some nice samples featuring characters from both Star Trek and Star Wars. He shows a good deal of love for the Lord of the Rings series as well as Harry Potter. He also has other comic book heroes such as Wonder Woman, Wolverine and the Fantastic Four. And anybody with an Indiana Jones quote in their profile is alright in my book.

Spider-Man color 2 by seanforney (right)

A freelance illustrator and comic book artist, Sean has a nice collection of Star Wars pieces on his Deviant page along with some other fan favorites such as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Voltron. He also has some nice pencil drawings, as well  as some interesting mash-ups, including an Elmer Fudd in an Orange Lantern get-up, and Thor battling Bizzaro Superman.

The Washington Post has posted an article discussing the possible damage to the Spider-Man brand. They cite the mis-steps with the musical and upcoming movie. Here is a link to the article. After you read it discuss it in the comment section. Thanks to Stillanerd on our message board for finding the article.

Marvel’s Senior Vice President of Publishing Tom Brevoort just posted this on his Formspring account talking about the Spider-Marriage. What do you think? Sound off on the comment section.

Question: Characters along with the rest of humanity, and most species, for that matter evolve. Why can’t Superman be married? Or Spider Man for that matter? Is it possible that books lose readers because the content doesn’t jive with the real world?

Brevort: The characters on most ongoing television series evolve very little, even over years. The same thing goes for characters in, say, comic strips. So I think that in certain ways, characters can evolve, but in others, it’s a bad idea to develop characters away from the very things that made them popular in the first place. To use a very old example, Fonzie the motorcycle-riding rebel was cool, Fonzie the High School teacher was lame. (And Fonzie the eventual married suburbanite with a motorcycle in his garage that he never touched because he was too busy earning a living to support his wife and two children would have been horrifying.) The appeal of Superman or Spider-Man has very little to do with them being married–and in fact, I think being married diminishes both of them on a conceptual level.

BANG! It figures that the weekend I decide to catch up on some gaming, television and reading, I fall behind and miss out on all the exciting news for Ultimate Spider-Man. By now everyone should know about the shot heard round the Ultimate world, as well as Axel Alonso’s follow up announcement that we’ll see a new character take up the mantle of Ultimate Spidey. In a spiffy new costume too. Exciting things ahead for Ultimate Spider-Man for sure. But for now, Pete’s in the crossfire of the Avengers and New Ultimates grudge match.
