The introduction to Mattie Franklin from “Amazing Spider-Man” issue 441 . This was the final issue of the series before it was rebooted to back to issue 1 and we are straight in the middle of the “Gathering of the Five/Final Chapter” mess.  As some of us know, Mattie had a role in the recent “Grim Hunt” storyline so be warned of spoilers in the comment section!

Didn’t we just have one-shot like this? Betty’s comment is helps with a constant debate that comes up among fandom. No Cissy, Peter doesn’t remember you and neither do any of the fans. Mary Jane’s comment….well I’m not even going to go there!

Face it tiger, you just hit the jackpot.

In the spirit of giving the people what they want, “Peter/MJ week” continues!

Amazing Spider-Man issue 193 is often touted as the issue where Peter and Mary Jane break up. Really what we see above is MJ’s full appearance in the issue. We don’t even get to see both of her eyes! Just that one line and (aside from a few cameos) she’s out of the book for years! To be fair the breakup was a slow burn that started ten issues earlier when she turned down his proposal of marriage. Well Peter doesn’t seem stressed out because his consolation prize just walked in.

In the spirit of giving the people what they want, “Peter/MJ week” continues!

Going backwards a bit from yesterday, here is Peter and Mary Jane’s first kiss. One of my favorite first kisses in comics ever. I love how Robbie is so obviously looking at them out of the corner of his eye. This classic moment can be found in “Amazing Spider-Man” issue 143 and is collected in the “Clone Genesis” trade paperback.

In the past I’ve tried to avoid some Peter/MJ heavy selections for “Spidey Memories” so we’d avoid a “marriage flame war”. With all the OMIT talk I figured it’s time to give the people what they want. So here begins a week of Peter/MJ heavy “Spidey Memories”.

This one is from “Amazing Spider-Man” issue 149 and is a much cited scene. It’s the conclusion of an emotional journey of Peter’s where he moves past the memory of Gwen (albeit through her clone) and is ready to start a relationship with MJ. Some speculate that this panel has them starting an “adult relationship”.

Goodness Bertone has been slacking on these “Spidey Memories”! Here is one that you all heard about when it was presented on the “Spider-Jeopardy” episode. Here is the page in question where Mary Jane gives the only thought balloon she has during Stan Lee’s original run (I’m not counting Stan’s returns for various anniversaries).

Now I just need to cook up some “Spidey Revisions” “Finding Gwen Stacy’s” and “Clone Pics of the day” for Zach….

After the subplot played out for about a year, Aunt May and Peter reconcile after she shunned him for dropping out of grad school. “Amazing Spider-Man” issue 265.

amz253

“Amazing Spider-Man” issue 253. Even though Peter had dropped out of graduate school (a moved I thought really aged him) ten issues earlier, Hobgoblins, Black Cats and alien abductions had kept him from telling Aunt May. He breaks the news here and she is less than pleased. It was almost a year before they would make up.

One of the most powerful scenes in Spider-Man history. “Amazing Spider-Man” issue 122. This scene carries more weight now when you find out that Mary Jane’s mother is dead.

Soap opera and affairs! Betty Brant gets caught in “Amazing Spider-Man” issue 273! What twist and turns await us next?

amz99

“Amazing Spider-Man” issue 99. Peter finally stands up to Jonah Jameson and earns himself a non-freelance staff position at the Daily Bugle.

spec3

From “Spectacular Spider-Man” issue 3. Gosh, Peter’s friends are RUDE! If my friends came into my house while I was sleeping (no invitation) and started playing loud music to wake me up…well there would be an altercation.

spec51

“Spectacular Spider-Man” issue 51 retconning the aliens from “Amazing Spider-Man” issue 2 even with the “never return to Earth” line. Heck, they even threw in a retconned Mysterio origin for good measrue.

amz2

The Silver Age sure was wacky! Spider-Man  fights aliens in “Amazing Spider-Man” issue 2. Don’t worry, we’ll post the retcon tomorrow.

Some of you asked real nicely, so  I present to you SPIDER-HULK! Want to see the full story? Check your back issue bins for “Web of Spider-Man” issue 70.

From “Web Of Spider-Man#69″. Betty Brant finally becomes a reporter. She wouldn’t become a judo karate butt kicking reporter until much later, but here is when her character took those first steps. But none of you care because this is the arc where Spider-Man turns into Spider-Hulk. If you ask REAL nicely I’ll post that one tommorow!

Another Beatles reference…and in another Green Goblin story. Coincidence? This is actually Gobbie’s first appearance (Amazing Spider-Man issue 14) and it consists of luring Spidey to Hollywood in an elaborate plot so he could…..bonk him on the head. Huh??? Well he eventually masterminded the clone saga.

By the way, when this was reprinted in the 80′s, it was changed to “Tom Selleck”. Now they would probably make it Johnny Depp.

amazing17

From “Amazing Spider-Man” issue 17. So much to say about this page…

1) The Beatles comment is pure win as far as I’m concerned. Speaking of the Beatles, Spideydude made a cameo on the fifth anniversary of “Bertone Beatle Bonanza” last week. Check it out.

2) So Jonah doesn’t want the club to be a success, and his plan is to have his newspaper cover it?

3) Betty’s solution is to call when Peter isn’t home? Is she that afraid of lying to simply pretend to call? Only in the early 60′s would this plan work.

4) Aunt May has no consideration for Betty Brant, the woman always visiting her in the hospital.

5) Mary Jane loves Spider-Man eh?

Peter left his microscope at Uncle Ben’s grave in “Amazing Spider-Man” issue 181. This caused some continuity problems when issue 290 came out years later.
