Of Contests, Fight Clubs, Delta House and Goodbyes

“The Road Goes Ever On and On…”

Hey there Crawl Spacers!  There’s a couple of past due items that we need to get to.  For one – the “Make Mine Married, Marvel!” Contest.  We’re actually over a month past the deadline, and I’ll apologize for that.  I’m working 65+ hours a week right now – including Saturdays – and I just haven’t had the free time to devote to All Things Crawl Space.  Brad “JoMo” Douglas is compiling the entries and I’ll be announcing the winner as soon as is possible.

More below the break…

Second – Fight Club.  It’s been almost two months since I’ve been able to get a new Fight Club match going, and Season Three has gone on hiatus.  I wish I could give you a timetable as to when I’ll be able to get back to it but I honestly can’t say right now.  Effective immediately, Deputy Commissioner AmFan15 is now ‘the Commish.’  He will handle Fight Club for you Crawl Space girls & boys from here on out.  He’s done a great job as Deputy Commissioner and I know he will do a great job as the new Big Cheese.  Fight Club will now be open to the masses and not restricted to posts by the Commissioner.  It will truly belong to “the People.”  So commence with the fisticuffs and have fun!

But what about that bedrock foundation of brotherhood and solidarity known as the Mighty Delta House?  I’m giving the reins – and the keys to the President’s suite – to Delta House co-founder stillanerd.  Please don’t forget to pay the electric bill; the blender in the Tiki Bar depends on it!

“But George!  This sounds like… goodbye?!”

That brings me to the last bit of news.  This one’s hard for me to get through.  For a couple of different reasons, including my demanding work schedule, I turned in my resignation to Brad as a Crawl Space podcast panelist today.  It’s not an easy decision for me but unfortunately right now it’s the best one.  I’ve had more good times and great memories being at the site and doing the podcast than I could ever possibly count.

To Brad Douglas – I am beyond thankful to you for giving me the opportunity to be involved with the site for as long as I have been.  You’re a great guy and a tremendous friend.  Keep doing things your way, pal.  All the best for the future.

To Kevin Cushing – Thanks very much for all the kind things you’ve said about me over the years and thanks for all the laughs and good times you’ve given me on the site.  The world doesn’t know what you have planned for it yet and I doubt it’s ready!  Keep being awesome bud.

To J.R. Fettinger – Ah, my old friend.  I will miss hearing your curmudgeonly wisdom and insight.  I can’t count the number of times I was sure I knew how you would react to this or that and you still found ways to surprise me with how you saw things.  Take care, Spider-Yoda!

To BertoneBeatle – Thanks for all the fun times and wackiness over the last few years – especially Spider-Jeopardy.  And thanks for all the time and effort you throw into doing things for the site.  I don’t think most Crawl Spacers realize just how much that is.

To Donomark – We didn’t always see eye to eye but damn do I respect you.  In many ways we’re so extremely different yet we’ve always found a way to enjoy each other’s company.  I’ll miss interacting with you quite a bit.  Take care, my young friend!

To CrazyChris – I enjoyed the back and forth we used to have and the laughs that would often come from it.  You’re someone who makes others “earn it,” almost across the board.  Keep that up and never give anyone a pass.

To All Crawl Spacers – Thanks again for all the support, all the camaraderie and all the shenanigans.  I’ll miss hearing your thoughts and seeing stories and events through the prism of the reader.  Please keep demanding a better Spider-Man and always keep Marvel honest.

I now float out across the transom towards that great Crawl Space in the sky to join Michael Bailey and Stella.  I will pop in from time to time when I can… maybe in the Comics forum over at Delta House, maybe in “teh Fight Clubz.”

Until then, I’m ‘East Bound and Down.’  10-4!

All My Best,

–George Berryman

  1. Thanks very much for all the comments, folks. I’ll miss the site – and you Crawl Spacers – very much. 🙂

  2. Good luck George. I can’t watch Smokey & the Bandit anymore without thinking of you. That and bacon. When I see something different about bacon, I wonder if George knows about it.

  3. George, you were the Jesse Ventura to Brad’s Vince McMahon. That sort of makes sense.
What a great picture of you and Brad. You look like the evil twin with the goatee, like the evil Michael Knight from Knight Rider.
OK, enough 80s references. All the best!

  4. oops. Forgot to say I was just kidding about the humor thing. All of you guys are funny, but George and JR just crack me up. (probably because I’m an old fart too)

  5. Wow. I have really just started listening to the podcast over the past year and I comment on a post from time to time, but this is terrible news. The humor of the podcast has just decreased by 40%. J.R. is going to have to make up for it.

Honestly though, what I loved most about what you brought to the podcast was the FACT that Spider-Man is a badass. He is not just comic relief. He has defeated A-list foes. Let’s see how long Daredevil or Captain America would last against Fire Lord or Morlun or the Rhino. Thanks for standing up for Spidey as a true powerhouse and great fighting hero. I don’t know you George, but I wish you the best and I hope time permits you to come back to the podcast at a later date. Thanks for your words of encouragement too, regarding fighting for a better Spider-Man and keeping Marvel honest.

    Excelsior!

  6. Goodbye George it has been fun. You have brought a lot to this site with your boundless energy and enthusiasm! I look forward to hearing from you when you can get your head above water.

  7. This is sad, indeed. But I said it once, I’ll say it again…

I ain’t quittin’ this site until Brad does…

  8. First Stella…then Kevin…Bailey…and now George! *insert Darth Vader No*

How do I say goodbye to what we had?
The good times that made us laugh
    Outweigh the bad.

I thought we’d get to see forever
    But forever’s gone away
It’s so hard to say goodbye to yesterday.

I don’t know where this road
    Is going to lead
All I know is where we’ve been
    And what we’ve been through.

If we get to see tomorrow
I hope it’s worth all the wait
It’s so hard to say goodbye to yesterday.

And I’ll take with me the memories
To be my sunshine after the rain
It’s so hard to say goodbye to yesterday.

And I’ll take with me the memories
To be my sunshine after the rain
It’s so hard to say goodbye to yesterday.

  9. 4 podcasters gone within a year! The Crawl Space will be a different place without you George. There aren’t many people who can join a board, stand out and be liked by just about everyone in a short period of time. Hope things pick up for you soon and you can still visit frequently.

  10. Damn…

George, my friend, I’m sorry for yor messy work schedule and I completely sympathize. You gotta do what you gotta do.

But I will miss you, my friend.

Your brave posts made me realize others felt as I did, got me motivated to come to Delta and Crawlspace. I still vividly remember how roud I was to be given my very own coveted Delta name card, so I proudly take my curdmugeonly place in your footsteps. Keep the faith, buddy, and I promise we will. Vaya con Dios, mi Amigo!

    Your friend,

    Boomstick

  11. Well it’s been awhile since I popped up here on the main page, but damn George if you couldn’t drag me out of this retirement, no one could. I wish the best of luck my fellow Fight Club foundee. Best of luck with everything that comes your way and I hope to see you again sooner rather than later.

  12. Say it ain’t so George! Well, keep in mind there is always some bacon waiting for you…cooked by Christina Hendricks! 🙂

You will be missed, but not forgotten! When time permits, a quick pop in from George is always welcome…

  13. Well damn, I never thought the day would come when Mr. Berryman would retire from the Crawlspace.

Well farewell, goodluck, and give ’em Hell George Berryman.

    ~Lament~

  14. Take care George. Getting to know you has been an absolute blast, and I’m glad to call you my friend.

  15. Well, crap. And there goes that new segment “This Month in Spider Porn with George” that was being planned. I’d get misty, but then again, after saying good-bye to George when he departed Hero Realm, and then watching him come roaring back on the Crawlspace – I have no doubt that we will see (or hear) more from him in the future…

  16. Best of luck in your future endeavors George, it sounds you’ve got bigger fish to fry right now. Still sad to see ya leave, your perspective will certainly be missed.

    Take care!

  17. George,
Thank you for everything you’ve done for the site and the friendship you’ve provided over the years. It was awesome that you were the first Crawlspacer I ever met in person and I’ll never forget that. When work lets up know that the door is always open at the Crawlspace for anything you’d like to do. I’ll keep a light on for ya. As Aunt May said in Spider-Man 1, “You work too hard, you’re not Superman you know.”

  18. George, there are things that we don’t see eye to eye with, but I respect you and what you’ve brought to the Crawlspace a lot. Thanks for everything and good luck, sir!

  19. I am truly saddened by this news. However, you do what you have to do. Hopefully we’ll be seeing you pop in for more than just the random post here and there.

Either way, take care George. I’ll miss you buddy.

  20. I consider myself among the newer regulars at the Crawlspace, but I’ve enjoyed what little time I’ve had to get to know you. You will certainly be missed, but I still hope for the best for you.

I watched that whole East and Bound video just for you. No part of this goodbye should go ignored.

  21. I’ll miss you, sir. Thank you for everything you’ve brought to the site. Good luck with all of your future endeavors, and take care of yourself. 🙂

  22. George, I must say that it’s been an honor and a privilege to work alongside you this past season in the Fight Club Forum. Yours are some mighty big boots to fill, but I will do my best to make you proud, sir.

You’ve been such a huge presence in this community for as long as I’ve been a member, George. From Spidey Friday Night Fights, to the various incarnations of Fight Club, to that grand upstanding edifice that we call Delta House.
You shall be greatly missed around these hallowed halls.

Best of luck to you, my friend…and keep in touch.

    – AmFan15 / Mike.
