Our lookback at Gwen resumes after a lengthy break! Between “Spidey Revisions”, “Spidey Memories” and other projects, I’ve neglected the very series that made Brad give me posting access! It’s been a delay between parts due to a combination of formatting issues and other problems. As I said before, this is best viewed in Firefox due to the way WordPress divides the placement of the images and text (a big part of why these take so long). Now let’s pick things up again…

Time for more classic Peter and Gwen stuff. No big introduction this time so let’s just jump right into things.

We are going to take a small interlude in our Gwen/Peter saga. As I said before, I will be posting all of Gwen’s appearances in “Amazing” during her lifetime (some of the post-death stuff will be in later parts). Since I am doing every last panel, it is prudent to do the Annuals and Specials. I didn’t want to break up the mainstoryline going on in “Amazing” so I am devoting this post to the Gwen stuff in Amazing Annuals 4 and 5 plus the Spectacular Spider-Man Special 2 (we’ll cover Special 1 when we get to the Conway years). They were all published around the time period we left off at so this feels like a good spot.

We are now in the heart of the Lee/Romita era! Peter and Gwen are having the first of their many soap operatic spats and breakups. Join us as we finally see them admit their feelings for eachother. All this and MJ’s awful awful awful haircut!

I suppose I’m a bit late here. These were originally intended to be churned out a few times a week, but that hasn’t been the case. Sad thing is, out of the all the online projects (blogs, podcasts, editing) this should be the easiest as I’m merely converting a project already written. Yet I make it difficult. Well if I can post a Dick Grayson/Babs Gordon bonanza for Stella, I suppose I have time to continue this!

Hopefully we’ll get these out more regularly. It has also come to my attention that this is best viewed in Firefox. For some reason the images and text show up on the screen arranged differently with Internet Explorer. But even then some versions of Firefox are different….it might help to press CTRL + or – until the images go on top of the text.

Since it’s been so long, let’s talk about where we last left things. The “will they or won’t they” (date not have sex..simpler times) tension with Peter and Gwen has come to a close. They are now dating…so where will the tension come from? Get ready for their first fight!

Gwen has been around for a little over twenty issues now, and she has already started evolving beyond control. We’ve seen John Romita take away her mean streak and we’ve seen Mary Jane take away her wild personality. Now another person is introduced who makes Gwen’s evolution take another turn. In this chapter we met Gwen’s father George Stacy, plus Peter and Gwen finally cut the bull and go out on their first date!

This was suppose to be posted Monday, but I was  having some computer problems and couldn’t load the images properly. I post the next part this weekend and then we’ll go back to the Monday/Friday schedule.

We are now entering the era that many creators fondly remember. I can’t count how many times I’ve seen an interview where a Spidey writer or editor talks about the “Betty and Veronica” days. The golden age of Spidey which they say was ruined when Gwen died.

As we will get into with later parts, it didn’t quite happen that way. The “Betty/Veronica” era ended much earlier, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves.
When we last left Gwen, Romita had mellowed her out. Then Mary Jane entered the picture. Now what?

Steve Ditko is off of the Spider-Man series and in his place we have John Romita. I will not go into the circumstances of Ditko’s departure because the endless speculation has been done elsewhere. John Romita was choosen to replace him, probably in some ways due to his great job drawing Spider-Man over in the pages of “Daredevil”. The infleunce of Ditko on the Spider-Man series and the Gwen character was very big. If you look at the last part whenever Gwen is draw she is wearing red (most of the time) and almost always has an angry expression on her face.

So what happens when somebody with experience in romance comics steps in?

gwen19Oh Ditko’s Gwen. You sure were a feisty one weren’t you. We are going to hit the ground running by looking at all of Gwen’s appearences in the Steve Ditko run. It’s amazing (no pun intended) how we go from who we see above, to who we see eventually fall off that bridge. How did it happen? Well let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

What do Gwen Stacy and Scans Daily have in common?

They’re both dead. Ironically enough both have had clones and imitators show up since their demise.

This blog series will ask and attempt to answer the question “Who is Gwen Stacy”. She is best known for dying. The story where she met her tragic end has gone down in comic history and is still talked about today. It was a controversial move that seemed to overshadow the character herself. Her death has been reprinted many times in many forms. Her character has not been as fortunate.
