Power Packed Reviews: Back Cat #8

I’m Back In Black. Now it’s time for our Miss. Hardy to meet the son of Nick Fury, and just maybe someone else. So let’s pick up 2 months later after the last arc, where we see Felicia has been going through a lot. It’s time to see how she handles her first big gig since what happened last arc.

Black Cat #8

Story: Black Cat is still in a dark place after what happened to The Black Fox. After 2 months of drowning in her sorrows, Felicia goes out on what she says is her biggest job yet. Her heist thou is interrupted by Nick Fury Jr.  The two have a very heated confrontation on Cat’s get away helicopter, but Hardy is able to escape when she drops Nick Jr. into the water below. Back at her base, and taping up her wounds. Felicia cracks open the nuclear waste capsule, and her crew sees that Star is inside.

Grade: B-

Pros

The Story: This was an good start to the new arc. Jed is one of my favorite writers with Marvel. He really gets the character, and wants to explore what makes Felicia tick. Stuff like in the opening with a guilt ridden Felicia drinking her pain away, and her inter dialog when breaking in, are the things I’m enjoying about this book. I really just wish we would get more if this in the book.

The Art: Even thou there are some problems in this issue. (We’ll get to it.) I do liked the art here a lot. Villa has a very classic and simple style here. I think it fit’s this book really well. Some of the action shots of Cat are just really cool to look at. I really dig his style in this title.

Cons

Nick Jr. : Wow do I want the real Nick Fury back. How can anyone take Nick Jr. seriously? I mean him being dropped into the Atlantic is one of the most comedic things I have seen in awhile in comics. He even says “This isn’t over yet” when falling like a Saturday morning supervillain. It’s an insult to not just 616 Nick Fury, but also the MCU/Ultimate Nick he’s based on.

The Timeline: So with this ending I’m trying to figure out where this all takes place with Infinite Destinies event. Is it before the ASM annual but after the Black Cat one?

Inking: This is going to sound nitpicky. But as much as I like the art, it’s taken down a bit by the inking here. I don’t know why, but some of the panels at the end with this book’s finishing touches just look sloppy, and rushed to me.

Overview: It’s a solid start to this new arc, and I’m eagerly waiting to see what fate has in stored for Cat in the coming issues. I love seeing the more of who the real Felicia is inside, and how she is coping with guilt over Black Fox. Also it’s nice to see her out class Nick Jr. But his old man would never let that happen to him. The art was mixed for me thou. Some stuff I really liked, and yet the finishing touches felt to be lacking, and rushed in places. Also so far not hyped for the stuff with Star, as I wasn’t big on the event going on around her. Still it’s nice to see our girl finally moving up in the greater Marvel Universe, and not just being Spider-Man’s naughty ex girlfriend. I just hope this book doesn’t get dragged down by too many events.
