Spider-Tracer: Top Ten Most Wanted Mego Figures

Remember those neat Mego Spider-Man figures from the 70’s and early 80’s? As you may know, the Mego Corporation has recently started remaking their old Mego Spider-Man figures in sets. Last year’s set included Spider-Man, Lizard, Green Goblin, and an all new Electro figure! And this year, we got a new Spider-Man set which included Black Costume Spider-Man, Mysterio, Doc Ock, and the Rhino! Each figure looks great, and they’ll fit with your old Mego figures, new and old, seamlessly. I love the new set so much, that it got me wondering who else I’d like to see from Mego. So, let’s take a look at my top ten, starting, in no particular order,  with…

Sandman

Sandman is a no-brainer for a Mego figure. Debuting in “The Amazing Spider-Man” Volume 1, #4, Sandman is mostly a plain clothes wearing villain, which should be easy enough for Mego to replicate. I would hope they’d find a way to include Sandman’s powers, whether as sand shapes for the hands to plug into, or a sandy mound base for the legs to be inserted into. With Electro, Doc Ock, and Mysterio already having figures, Sandman would help add to a complete Sinister Six, as will the next two figures on this list…

Vulture

Mego already made a winged character in the 70’s with their Falcon figure, so I have no doubt that an even better job could be done in the present with a Vulture figure. First debuting in “The Amazing Spider-Man” Vol. 2, #2, Vulture would look amazing as a Mego figure. I know Mego doesn’t really do alternate heads for their figures, but I wish they’d make an exception for Vulture so as to allow for a Blackie Drago look.

Kraven the Hunter

With his wild lion mane vest and toothy belt, Kraven would be a real standout on any Mego fan’s shelf! First appearing in “The Amazing Spider-Man” Vol. 1, # 15, Kraven would be an excellent choice for a Mego figure, especially if he was able to get a few weapons like a spear, and maybe even a hunting rifle for some “Kraven’s Last Hunt” action now that we also have Spidey in his black costume!

Shocker

Debuting in a padded quilt costume in “The Amazing Spider-Man” Vol. 1, #46, you can’t tell me that Shocker wasn’t made for a toyline where clothes make the figure! With a brown and yellow costume, Shocker would really stand out from your other Spidey villains which primarily wear green.

Scorpion

If Lizard proved anything, it’s that a villain with a tail is not off limits in the Mego line! Scorpion first appeared as his villainous alter-ego in “The Amazing Spider-Man” Vol. 1, #20, where he gave Web-Head a real fight! The new Doc Ock has bendy wire tentacles, while Lizard’s tail was stuffed cloth. I would hope to see cloth for Scorpion’s tail with a bendy wire inside to help it hold its shape; it’d be the best of both worlds, really.

Hobgoblin

Hobgoblin first appeared in “The Amazing Spider-Man” #238 in 1983, which was about a year or so after the Mego Corporation quit making figures of Marvel characters. Fortunately, Hobgoblin got his shot not long after his debut in the Secret Wars toy line, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t make me wonder how he’d have turned out in the Mego line. Like Green Goblin, Hobgoblin would look great in Mego form, and could even reuse a few parts from ol’ Norman, including his satchel and base body! Bonus points if they give him his Goblin Glider, a feature that not even Norman had!

Kingpin

Kingpin, who first menaced the Wall-Crawler in “The Amazing Spider-Man” #50, would be, much like Shocker, another needed villain to break up all of that green on your shelf! He’d probably need an entirely new base body, but it’d be totally worth it to get a figure of Fisk, am I right?

Jackal

The Jackal first appeared in 1974’s “The Amazing Spider-Man” #129, which was during the early years of Mego’s Marvel figures. With his furry suit, there’s no denying that such a look would really distinguish Miles Warren from his fellow Spider-Man villains.

Punisher

First appearing in the same issue as the Jackal, the Punisher hit the scene and left a memorable impression on readers, thanks in no small part, to that stunning John Romita Sr. design! Punisher would look great as a Mego figure, especially if he skewed slowly towards his original design elements. Plus, he’d give Spidey an ally against the likes of the Jackal and Kingpin, when they’re not fighting each other, of course.

Chameleon

I know I touched on the fact that Mego doesn’t really do alternate heads when we talked about Vulture, but if anyone needed such a feature, it’s “The Amazing Spider-Man” Vol. 1, #1’s villain, the Chameleon! How cool would it be if he came with a J. Jonah Jameson head, a Captain Stacy head, and even a Norman Osborn head? I’d have to track down a few of him in order to display all four of them, and I’m sure I wouldn’t be alone!

And there’s my top ten most wanted Mego figures, Spidey fans! Who’s on your list? And did you pick up any of the new Mego releases? Be sure to let me know in the comments section below, and I’ll see you all next month!
