This past weekends Chicago Comic-Con had a bit of info on a new Spider-Man mini series. Writer Paul Tobin and artist Patrick Scherberger are going to team up on Spider-Man & The Secret Wars. The mini-series will show the war through Spidey’s point of view. It’s hard to believe, but the original Secret Wars happened 25 years ago! Check out CBR for more on the upcoming title.

Why does Secret Wars need to be told through Spider-Man’s eyes? I didn’t understand that when the 90s cartoon did it and I don’t understand it now. Secret Wars was one of the first comics I ever read so I really don’t want to taint that memory by seeing someone else mess with it. Venom Dark Origins was so bad I read ASM 300 again to make me forget about it.
As someone who experienced the Secret Wars in junior high when it originally hit in the mid-80’s I am looking forward to this. It’s got one of the best Spidey moments of all time (one of the few occasions that he single-handedly defeats the X-Men) and it’s just damn fun. It was a giant ‘popcorn movie’ event for Marvel and it had some cool toys, too. To folks it doesn’t measure up to today, all I can say is “You just had to be there.” This is from a period in time where cynicism and pessimism was the exception and not the norm like we have right now. It’s not jaded, it’s not avant-garde, there’s no graphic murder or language or geriatric sex or anything ‘edgy’ and it doesn’t try to be anything other than what it is – giant, goofy superhero fun. I’m with Brad on this. The original Secret Wars is one of my all time faves.
I saw the cover art and thought they’re making it again for the “Marvel Adventures” series, looks like I’m not a loner on this thought
If they called “Bob Layton” himself that would really be neat, but from the current artists in the business I really support such events to be drawn by either “Mark Buckengham” or “Phil Jimeniz”
Well two good things came out of it: Collosus/Kitty got done broke’d up ’cause of it…oh, and a lil’ something called Venom.
BTMX,
It’s in my top 10 of all time. I’m a kid of the 80s and have very fond memories of it. I re-read it about 5 years ago and still love it.
Am I the only one who thinks the original Secret Wars was boring, had too many characters, and wasn’t an all around good read?
Yeah it looks a little too Marvel Adentures to me too. I wish they would have found someone similar to Bob Layton and Mike Zeck.
…Spidey looks like a fracking kid…unless the Secret Wars still occured in the 1980s (modern time: Gwen died in 1999) then the art is justified, if not, I’ll skip right past this under the impression it’s the Marvel Adventures line.
I hope the story is going to be good, because that cover art blows….
