This latest revision is from “Web of Spider-Man” issue 50. During this time period Peter and Mary Jane were living with Aunt May and her boarders. It’s a good thing Aunt May is so liberal.

so awesome!
good times. Bring back the marriage!
Ahem, back to the Spidey Revision #3… I never imagined they had put this stuff in a comic. Huh.
I kinda think its not the fact that they did “renew the status quo”, but its how they did it thats the problem. They could have had May just get better, and MJ leave because it was too hard a time for her. The Avengers could have put out a public statement saying Peter isn’t Spider-Man, it was a Skrull trying to mess with people (this would be cool, since it would add a helluva lot more tension between Spider-Man and the public eye). If Marvel did something along the lines of that, sure there would be complainers (there always are) but it would be far less catastrophic as BND.
“usually all the anti’s are the people who want the same feeling about Spider-Man they got when they first started reading him when they were children.” No, sorry Spideykicksbutt, what I meant was that all the anti’s to anything in the Spiderverse are longtime readers who will always say that Spider-Man was better when they were kids, so much to the point that they whine and complain about how terrible the book is now. And when something is done to get Spidey back to the way things were when they were kids, they complain.
I leaped in during the clone saga and I thought it was great because I wasn’t an avid reader in the 70’s and 80’s (I was not even born for most of the 70’s and I couldn’t afford comics from my paltry allowance until I was 14), and I knew Spider-Man’s back story from various sources, which always dealt with the time he was in high school. I missed out on a lot. Whenever I bought any Spider-books before this, one book was enough to get my fix, as I didn’t really care about the character enough to go find out what he’d been doing since high school. And once I had the cash, the clone saga came along and basically told me, “Just knowing the basic back story is enough, there’s not need to worry about who’s who in Spider-Man’s supporting cast, You don’t know who Kraven the hunter is? Fine. You don’t know who MoonKnight is? Fine. You don’t know that Spider-Man had a long term relationship with the Black Cat? Fine! It doesn’t matter!” So that’s why I liked the Clone Saga. I could get by with just a passing knowledge of Spider-Man without having to be an expert on him. That of course got me more interested in the character, so I ended up becoming an expert anyway. However, they lost me and my lunch money after SM75. Since then I think I’ve actually bought 3 comic books, and this is after being an addict and spending loads of cash on reassembling almost the entire clone saga. That said, I can totally understand why longtime readers didn’t like it.
And yes, while I am anti-OMDBND, I can respect that other people might like it, especially if they are just now getting into the character. If Marvel caves in and restores the marriage, then they might lose a lot of people who are just now getting into it and liking that they don’t need to be Spider-Man experts to enjoy what’s going on.
“usually all the anti’s are the people who want the same feeling about Spider-Man they got when they first started reading him when they were children.”
Actually, that’s EXACTLY the impression that Joe Quesada and company give when they talk about wanting the marriage revoked and Peter not being a father. Quesada once said something along the lines of “If I was a kid and read about Peter Parker changing diapers, I would never have read Spider-Man again.” Whether that is their intention or not (and it may not be), the impression we are left with is they have moved Spider-Man in this particular direction to get back their “old time” feeling. Coincidentally, Spider-Man actually is now where he was when I was a child, but I prefer the married version. Oh well.
I’ll tell you what looks bad more than these light hearted revisions…or the people who criticize them. It’s Spider-Man fans fighting with each other. It looks retarded to anyone who isn’t a hardcore fan of anything geeky. Imagine people getting in a flamewar over who’s better, Captain Janeway or Counselor Troi. Or imagine people arguing about which breakfast cereal is better. It’s retarded. Fact is, all of us like Spider-Man, and all of us aren’t going to be happy all the time with whatever the character is going through, and usually all the anti’s are the people who want the same feeling about Spider-Man they got when they first started reading him when they were children.
Oh my God, these are funny!
Where are they reposting these Bertone? That’s awesome!
Dude, peter DOES look pissed….like, really really pissed. Like he was about to blow a web-ball and aunt may came in and ruined the whole thing. You cant stay mad at aunt may though.
Just looking at the images I am waiting for Aunt May (Annie Wilkes-Misery) to bring in the typewriter, and demand a rewrite on the spidey saga.
D: I’m sorry BD, I didn’t mean harm! (I put a disclaimer, I’m sorry) =/ Fair is fair…
Heh, that make’s sense Bertone, I wasn’t aware of that. I had a crazy idea this could have been staged by one person just to get a rise… never mind =P
Iron Lantern-Please don’t impersonate other posters. I can track IP’s and Dan did post on the main page because it matched his IP from the MB. I’ve since changed your posting name to IL.
Brad, thanks for the civil response. After being called an ass hat and being told no one cares what I’O think, it’S nice to read your response! I enjoy all of the features you mentioned and have been a visitor to the site for years. I born enjoy your podcasts, especially JR’s impressions! 🙂 the difference I feel between then and this new feature is that this seems specifically designed to pick at a two year old wound, which is still fresh for some people who like to jump at any chance to slam ASM ( it’s not BND and hasn’t been for a while now ) , these guys need little encouragement, and this new feature is akin to a red rag to a bull, imo. I just question it’S placement on the main page, most of the both rhetoric is safely tucked away in relevant threads, I know where to look and therefore don’t because the wound is healing nicely for me, no need to pick at it it’s harder to ignore when it’s on the main page on a daily basis Anyway, this is just my 2 cents worth, thanks for your time, keep up the good work
