Paul Giamatti in talks to play The Rhino

paul giamattiFelicity JonesNo really. If you had asked me what actors might realistically consider playing The Rhino in a feature film, the first thing I would have done would probably be to remove the Oscar nominees from the list. And yet, The Hollywood Reporter tells us that the two-time Golden Globe winner is indeed in talks to play the Russian powerhouse in Amazing Spider-Man 2. And it turns out Giamatti has expressed interest in the character before:

“I thought Rhino was the greatest thing when I was a little kid,” he told ShowbizSpy in March 2011. “It was a guy who was basically in this rhinoceros outfit and I always thought, ‘Why don’t they have The Rhino in one of their movies,’ but maybe The Rhino wasn’t that big of a deal for anybody but me…If they ever go with The Rhino I would be ready and waiting.”

Also in talks for a role in the film is 29-year-old English actress Felicity Jones. We don’t know what role she’s negotiating for, but I figured it was good enough reason to throw up a photo for you, Crawlspace fans.

So what are your thoughts? In a world where we already have an Oscar winner confirmed to play Electro, could it be time for an Oscar nominated Rhino?

  1. So.. both Electro and Rhino in one movie?
Sony made some wild stories in the past when it comes to Spidey films, so I won’t assume anything is real until I see some hard evidence

  2. Maybe he’ll play the human side of the Rhino. In the amazingly Spider-Man game it said he was a dude with Rhino DNA. This might also prove that the games aren’t canon.

  3. well he already starred in arguably the best comic book movie ever (American Splendor) so, yeah…I just wanted to plug that movie.

  4. I’m thinking she might be Bertone’s favorite character………Betty Brant.(insert evil villain laugh)

  5. Hey, if Jamie Foxx can be Electro, why not Mr. “Shoot Em Up?”

Oh hush, that movie was a guilty pleasure!

  6. BLACK CAT BLACK CAT BLACK CAT. C’mon ‘felicity’ is close to Felicia

if this is legit and the Rhino is in this now…theyre doing the Sinister Six. No question anymore. We have the Lizard, Electro, the Rhino, 99% sure we have a Goblin and with a nother movie to go along with the guy in the post credit scene possibly being Mystero if it wasn’t Electro then we’re one member short. Maybe Harry Osborn as a junior Goblin….or mayb this felicity lady reimagined as a geuinly villainous black cat. and then we’re at six

  7. Well, this is fascinating news, and I do think Paul Giamatti is a good enough actor to pull it off. The only misgiving I have is that it also means we’re getting another comic book movie with multiple super-villains in lead roles, which historically doesn’t have a very good track record. The only ones who have been successful in pulling it off are the X-Men films (which are ensemble films to begin with) and Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy.

  8. Sorry to double-post. It just ocurred to be that the might do the Oksana thing and make Rhino sympathetic.

  9. #3 – totally agree. I’m just having a hard time with the whole stature thing. Rhino should be a BIG guy. Giamatti can probably pull off the not-so-bright thing because of his acting ability. But, what are they going to do to make him appear huge, a Gandalf/Frodo CG thing?

  10. Paul Giamatti is a fantastic actor, I have liked him in everything that I’ve ever seen him in!

  11. I have vauge recollections but I think he kinda looks like the Ultimate Version of Rhino. It has been a while though so could be completely off base
