The Hobgoblin is Inverted as AXIS continues in November

AXIS-Inversion-new-costumes
Marvel held a press conference today about the upcoming Marvel NOW changes and how what happens in the AXIS crossover leads several of the heroes and villains on their new paths. Pretty much the Red Skull with the powers of Onslaught inverts the heroes and villains turning them into who they once were or evolving them to their worse states. When asked about the Hobgoblin by Word Balloon, Rick Remender could not reveal what happens to Kingsley.

“I think that anything about him kills the reveal of him during Inversion and his tie-in mini-series. Sorry, John, didn’t mean to pick yours as the one with no answer.”

The Hobgoblin looks almost demonic in his inverted state. Thoughts on what the Red Skull does to Kingsley?

  1. @3 – Kinglsey always wanted power, and after his encounter with the Kingpin circa ASM 250, he realized that Kingpin would need to be removed as an obstacle for his rise to be successful. He just so happened to capture Ned Leeds (who was trailing him at the time) and Ned (under the Winkler machine) revealed that Richard Fist was going to start a plot to take down his father. Kingsley co-opted the plan (just like he did with Norman’s stuff). Ned was only used to “reveal” to Fisk that the Hobgoblin could be trusted as their own. Ned only took on the mantle as the Hobgoblin during the “Gang War” story when Kingsley realized things were spiraling out of control. Hope that helps!

@4 Inverting doesn’t necessarily mean “sane” to “insane”… And Kingsley was still a dick even before he was the Hobgoblin. But it leads to an interesting point, which is that an “inverted” Kingsley might have better intentions, but is still ruthless in his actions to achieve those goals.

  2. I might be confused here, but don’t understand how you can “invert” Roddy? Hasn’t it been established that he was never insane and had the same ruthless and selfish personality before he was the Hobgoblin?

  3. I remember reading an interview about this that indicated that Remender was heading down the “business mogul” route with Kingsley. And wasn’t it the Winklered Ned Leeds who wanted to become a mob boss?

  4. What will be interesting for Kingsley is he was a business mogul before he decided to become the Hobgoblin. You have to wonder if he would go straight to that persona again or full on super powered mob boss which he tried several times.

  5. We all knew the inversion was coming… I’ll admit, I’m curious to see where this takes Kingsley for the mini. The Carnage one, a bit less so. Although it might be interesting to see how both characters treat their past ill deeds once they’re flipped.
