Marvel Looks At ‘Spiral’ Villains

  1. I mean… well, Peter is not crazy like a serial Killer, but he is not healthy. He has… problems.

  2. @#23-????? Crazy is a colloquial term for someone who is mentally ill. You can’t be mentally ill but not ‘crazy’. Also who are you referring to?

  3. @#21-Speaking realistically from a psychological pint of view Spider-Man WOULD be diagnosed as mentally ill. But comic book logic and the wacky world they live in means he isn’t. Interestingly Hobgoblin is identified as the non-crazy Goblin villain but realistically he displays many signs of real world psychopathy

  4. @19-“Peter isn’t mentally ill, so his urge to help others isn’t compulsive”

Well, I’m not sure about this.

  5. Peter isn’t mentally ill, so his urge to help others isn’t compulsive. He knows the world is filled with other peace-keepers. And any fiction writer could set up a scenario where the Parkers got a modest income from some source that let him be Spider-Man (an inheritance, a supportive benefactor, a photography career that got “hot”). So there are no reasons why Peter and MJ couldn’t be married and he still fights crime. Marvel’s reasons against it are all self-created.

  6. @#10-In fairness in the 80s-90s Spider-Man battled Venom but he was scared of him. He admits as much in the Carnage arc.

@#13-In comics the content of the book is almost irrelevant in the face of what banner is on the over or what writer credits. Slott is a hot property. Amazing Spider-Man is a big name. Secret Wars is the event and the marriage is a buzz generator. As is Venom.

@#15-You joke but I feel like I’m living through those 20 years after Revenge of the Sith and before A New Hope right now.

  7. I guess I’ll get Gerry Conway’s AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #19.1 and Jason’s SPIDER-GWEN #5. Not gonna buy any of the Secret Wars crap.

  8. If there’s any justice in the world, Conway’s Spider-Man book will outsell Slott’s inevitably terrible take on the Spider-Marriage.

  9. @#11- I think it also shows that there are forces at Marvel that probably weren’t fans of the way the storyline unfolded.

Given how quickly that storyline was dropped like a stone in the last issue of ASM (Seriously, Peter and Silk go from being unable to keep their hands off each other to Silk disappearing from the book without a single comment) I have a feeling that this will be an element that will be SERIOUSLY downplayed the next time Peter shows up, to not being addressed at ALL. They’ll probably talk about something about their attraction, but it will NOT be as strong as it was under Slott’s pen.

  10. @#6 RDMacQ — I thought virtually the very same thing. Because that’s about as fast of a mea culpa over a storyline that I can remember seeing.

@7 George Berryman — Exactly! Or at the very least, far closer to the spirit of Spider-Man. Excellent, excellent point, George.

  11. I really hate how Peter is drawn in the cover for Renew Your Vows 2. It makes him look like he’s absolutely terrified of Venom. The Peter Parker I know wouldn’t act like a pansy when it came to Venom, he would get serious and he’d meet him head-on.

  12. @7- That, George, is why you’re the man! That, right there, describes the real Spidey/MJ that we know and love.

Also, @2 Sean is true- it kind of sends a bad message that two single people manage to make ends meet far more than a married couple. Way to stick the finger to all your married fans, Marvel.

Ah, well; at least Silk knows what it’s talking about (I hope).

  13. #7 – That’s actually a very good point in that it’s actually more true to the character and history compared to the recent stuff. I suppose I’m just irritated at what feels like an implication that they can’t be mildly successful if married with a child. Weren’t they doing okay back when he was a teacher and whatnot?

  14. I’d rather read about a Peter Parker having to “scrape by” for his family over a Peter Parker who tries to run his own corporation. One of them is true to the character’s history; the other is not.

  15. I do like the solicitation for Silk #5- “Silk and Spider-Man, together in one book (no, not together. Calm down.)”

You know a plot was poorly received when the SOLICITS for the book featuring the characters references the fallout of the pairing, and tries to smooth things over with fans.

  16. Oh, by the way – “Renew Your Vows” is NOT the
    one I’ve been asking for!!

  17. So, Spiral is continuing through Secret Wars. Very interesting but I see it wrapping up all those loose ends since they are focusing more with Black Cat in Silk too.

  18. Only thing of interest to me is the Howard the Duck collection.
    @ #1, yeh, good homage!

  19. “Have to scrape by to make ends meet”? So, what, are they saying that if Peter and MJ have a kid then they can barely make a living as opposed to being single where they’re both really successful as a super scientist CEO and owner of a successful (?) night club? Because that sort of seems like a bad message to send to people and rather forced on Marvel’s part. Maybe I’m reading too deep into it though.

The second issue seems to indicate Peter is back to being a photographer. For some reason the way Peter is drawn is hilarious to me. I rather wish it wasn’t Venom for the villain. Speaking personally I’m rather tired of Eddie at this point.

Gwen facing off with Norman has the potential to be interesting.

I really hope Miguel does show up in Secret Wars 2099 at some point though it being only a five issue series doesn’t give the impression it will be for long.

  20. OMG, the cover to the Spider-Man Big Time–The Complete Collection Vol. 4. Oh that was a good laugh, I needed that.
