@#1: I agree with everything you said…but I am still going to check this out because I’ve wanted AN adaptation of KLH for over ten years and this is better than nothing.
Ugh.
Ugh. Ugh. Ugh.
This is NOT the J.M. DeMatteis masterpiece.
This is a prose version based on DeMatteis’s comic, but one that changes a lot of plot points (and uses a stilted, tell instead of show, and at time overly melodramatic prose style as well. The sample available on Amazon caused so much eye rolling on my part, I think one of my eye muscles is still strained).
One of the key plots points it removes, naturally, because this is Quesada’s and Brevoort’s Marvel, is Peter and Mary Jane’s marriage. So instead of newlyweds, anxious to start a new life together only to have the life stolen from both of them, now MJ is just the (newish) girlfriend. Because that doesn’t change any of the character dynamics or the stakes at all, oh noes.
MJ’s plot revolves around, “oh dear, is little ol’ silly me strong to be Spidey’s girlfriend? I just don’t know!” It’s a tired, cliched, unoriginal “superhero girlfriend” storyline, and goes against the established character in the comics (Kleid also ignores that MJ “always knew” Peter’s secret in the comics and instead includes a perfunctory flashback of Peter telling the unsuspecting, rather air headed MJ his secret just a few days prior to the start of thr novel).
Kleid also apparently removes the scene of MJ visiting Robbie – ie showing MJ being proactive – in favor of yet another “oh noes, I’m just not strong enough to be Spidey’s girl!” scene. And in an interview, he refers to all the charcaters being haunted by “coffins:” Kraven’s is a coffin of misplaced honor; Pete’s a coffin of guilt, while MJ’s coffin is…drumroll…her relationship with Peter! And she has to find ways to crawl back in it! I wish I was making this up, but I’m not – it’s in an interview Kleid did with comicbook.com.
The sample made me flee Amazon. There’s no way I’d pay even more for the audiobook.
Of course, it goes without saying that the original Kraven’s Last Hunt is very definitely worth reading and owning.
