Topher Grace Defends Sam Raimi and Spider-Man 3

TopherEddieWhile speaking to the Hollywood Reporter on… well, non-Spidery things… Topher Grace, who played Eddie Brock/Venom in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3 defended the director and the film, which is considered to be one of the more inferior Spider-movies.

Via Hollywood Reporter:

I know the movie did well for Sony, but I also know a lot of people weren’t happy with it. I think Sam is so talented. I remember one time I was on ninth unit. (Laughs.) Ninth unit? It’s like he’s running a small country. This summer, there was a movie like that where people are just slamming a big studio movie. I would love to see anyone who’s slamming one of those movies try to fit in Sam Raimi’s position. He was like the president of a small country — by the way, it had the gross national income of a small country, too. I have huge respect for him. I think, on a whole, he did such a fantastic job [on that trilogy].

You may remember that earlier this year Sam Raimi expressed some regrets over how Spider-Man 3 turned out.

  1. If I could somehow combine Sam Raimi and Andrew Garfield on the next Spidey movie, I would. Garfield was the only actor who ever got the whole character of Spidey, whereas Raimi knew how to do a good Spidey story (I even enjoyed the the third movie he did).

  2. I can understand Sam admitting his mistakes and regrets in making Spider-Man 3, and I can also admit standing in Topher camp on this one.

I enjoy all 5 of the Spider-Man movies, and Spider-Man 3 is easily better than The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

  3. Spider-Man 3 was EASILY the worst of the Raimi trilogy. Sandman’s transformation was pretty much the only good scene in the whole movie, IMO. But as cool as that scene was, nothing…absolutely NOTHING…can excuse disco dancing Emo-Peter…If I had actually gone to the theater to see this movie (instead of waiting until DVD like I did…thankfully), I would have walked out.

I actually liked Amazing Spider-Man 2. I thought it was much better than Spider-Man 3.

  4. I love Spider-Man 3. It has problems but I rewatch the hell out of it and love it every time. Especially the “emo” Peter secition, the dancing on the street is brilliant. And I enjoyed Topher as Eddie Brock a lot too.

    It’s a much better movie than ASM2!
