Podcast #416 Spider-History March 2006 Video Edition

JR takes us back to March 2006 to review the Spider-Man: The Other story line. Books focused on are:
Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #4
Marvel Knights Spider-Man # 22
Amazing Spider-Man # 528
Does this 12 part story line rank better than other multiple Spider-stories like Maximum Carnage, Kraven’s Last Hunt or Back in Black?
I will have the audio only version of this available soon. But I thought you all would like to see this video since we just recorded it tonight.

  1. I just fully read The Other for the first time a few months ago. I think the idea wasn’t bad, and there’s of course some good writing by Peter David (that he actually tried to follow up on in FNSM), but the last 4-5 parts of the story disappears completely up its own ass.

Also, I think they’ve done the death / resurrection of Peter stuff to death the last 10 years. By now, it’s at best a cheap shock story telling tactic.

  2. “JR, when you used to tell your kids bedtime stories, were you also so animated and physical? I try to imagine what a given story of “Goblins and Princesses” before putting the kids away is like with him acting it out.”

Well, I always did give a spirited reading of Dr. Seuss’ The Foot Book (left foot, left foot, right foot, right…) for Rachel. I also once demonstrated for her how her reading in front of the class of “Little Rabbit Foo Foo,” should go but she ignored my advice.

Seriously, though, when the Punisher in Netflix’s Daredevil always quoted a line from a kids book before blowing away some creep, that kind of punched me in the gut a little.

  3. I lost it when Brad knocked the head off the figurine when JR was narrating. Perfect timing.

  4. People seem to like “the other” storyline. They keep asking me to adapt it. I don’t know why

  5. JR, when you used to tell your kids bedtime stories, were you also so animated and physical? I try to imagine what a given story of “Goblins and Princesses” before putting the kids away is like with him acting it out.

Speaking of kids, you got JR telling and acting out a retro-review, George leaning in listening intently like a good boy, and that bratty Brad (Bradty) acting out while the fatherly one is trying to entertain!

I was really confused when he pulled out an empty lunchbox, clearly big enough to only fit jelly beans. Seriously, what was that?!! Brad, you could use that space to advertise products for Marvel. While watching the panelist, display Marvel merchandise and scroll a phone order number so we can buy while we podcast.

  6. The Other was just such an abysmal story line and Sins Remember was worse. I don’t get the mind set of a story that had no point and reaction that not only never made sense but went nowhere. I will give Peter David props for trying to give closure for the storylines from Jameson and Civil War to Ms. Arrow, but these were bad stories but waaaaayy much better than now.
