Peter David and Mark Bagley launching new Spider-Man book

During a press conference for The Clone Conspiracy #3, Spider-Man line editor Nick Lowe solicited a one-shot which includes a story with a much-hyped creative team including “one of the greatest writers in Marvel history, drawn by one of the greatest artists in Marvel history.”

It seems we now know the team. In Marvel’s solicitations for March 2017  they promised that Clone Conspiracy Omega would include the announcement for “the next big Spider-Book by Peter David & Mark Bagley.”

Peter David has worked on the Spider-Man books in four decades, with a run on Peter Parker the Spectacular Spider-Man in the 1980s, Spider-Man 2099 in the 1990s, Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man in the 2000s, and another run of Spider-Man 2099 at the current moment. Mark Bagley worked on Amazing Spider-Man with David Michelinie for a few years, before his 110 issue run of Ultimate Spider-Man with Brian Michael Bendis. He returned to that world for the Death of Spider-Man arc, and the Ultimate End mini-series. He also illustrated the 1994 Amazing Spider-Man trading card series, which referenced Peter David’s Sin-Eater saga.

A few days ago, Jamie Lovett of comicbook.com rated Mark Bagley as the third best Spider-Man artist ever. Peter David is consistently rated as one of the best Spider-Man writers ever, with an 8th place ranking on a comic book resources readers list being an example.

Bleeding Cool featured speculation about Peter David and Mark Bagley on a Ben Reilly title before Marvel announced the creative team, but there’s no official word yet on what the book is going to be about. Anyone want to do the math, and figure out which of the two worked on more Spider-Man comics?

  1. This sounds cool, but I sure wouldn’t get my hopes up. They will be hamstrung by the current Spider-Man status quo. So even great creators like David and Bagley will most likely be forced to make whatever they do suck as bad as all the other Spider-books do these days. But I hope I’m wrong and it’s awesome.

  2. I have that collectible card set bar a few rares that my comic book dealer snaffled for himself! Bags is a consistently good artist although back in the 90s (when that set came out) he probably never got the recognition that Todd McFarlane and others received.

  3. It’s been around a decade since I bought anything from Marvel…COMPLETE BOYCOTT. I don’t even recognize any of the characters anymore.

That being said, I might have to break that and check this out. This is possibly the greatest creative team I’ve ever seen. Peter David is one of my favorite writers of all time, and Mark Bagley is in my top 3 best Spidey artists.

You forgot to mention the Spider-Man/Batman crossover in Bagley’s credits.

  4. Dear Marvel,
Please remove Slott from The Amazing Spider-Man title and put these fine men on the book. Slott has been on the title long enough. This would bring back many readers like me who refuse to buy anymore Slott written books. I don’t even recognize the character anymore thanks to the damage Slott has done to the character. Please put Peter David and Mark Bagley back in charge of getting Peter Parker back to his original roots.

  5. Look, Marvel. JUST TAKE SLOTT OFF THE D*** BOOK AND PUT THESE GUYS ON IT. Why are you wasting better writers on satellite titles?

  6. I haven’t been this excited for a Spider book in a long while.
I think I may have just peed a little from geeker joy.
    Yup. Peed.

  7. OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD

(ok, calm down, don’t count your chickens, nothing’s for certain yet …)

    PETER DAVID AND MARK BAGLEY!!!!!
