April 2018 Spider-Solicitations with JH Commentary

Here comes April 2018 and with it the rise of the Red Goblin, a  Champions reshuffle and- another Venom event? Are you kidding me? What, is there a film coming out or-? Oh, there is? And they don’t even show Venom in the trailer? Oh god.

2018’s going to be a long year.

Comments: We now know that Dan Slot will be seeing off his run of almost 10 years with a Carnage-Norman Osborn collab. How such a bold choice will play out we have yet to find out but I for one remain cautiously optimistic that Slott will be able to conclude his run with a solid finale.

The battle is over, and those left standing in the rubble have to find a way to move forward. As an era of the Avengers comes to a close, what will rise to take its place?
32 PGS./Rated T+ …$3.99

Comments: So far this event has been, like its predecessors, fine. Nothing spectacular, just fine. Not even a quirky new line-up has got me pumped for this series’ future as I feel Avengers, through too many teams and too many events, has lost its spark.

CHAMPIONS #19
JIM ZUB (W) • SEAN IZAAKSE (A)
Cover by Stefano Caselli
A WIDER WORLD Part 1
• IRONHEART and THE UNSTOPPABLE WASP join the Champions at last! The team has grown but the mission stays the same – the Champions fight to make the world a better place for all!
• Writer Jim Zub (AVENGERS: NO SURRENDER) and artist Sean Izaakse (UNCANNY AVENGERS) reunite to push the Champions beyond their limits with any icy Antarctic adventure that will challenge everything they believe in!
• Don’t miss this first chapter of a new era of Champions – and the birth of a brand new hero!
32 PGS./Rated T+ …$3.99

Comments: Ironheart and the Wasp finally join the Champions! Whilst I welcome Ironheart with open arms, I liked the idea of Wasp on the Avengers because it showed that all young people don’t necessarily have the same beliefs. Apart from this minor qualm, I am curious to see what the new creative team does with a book that has rapidly become a Marvel mainstay.

Comments: I’m glad Marvel are finally starting to do something with Venom again, as I feel his character has been really underutilized lately. We have legacy heroes and events coming out of our ears but really I’ve been asking: where is Eddie Brock? What’s he up to? Will he team up with other heroes? I’m glad Marvel are finally listening and for the first time in a while giving us a story with Venom at front and centre.

Comments: I’m sorry, this book has lost me. I liked the original concept but with the time skip it has become a tired retread of ideas done better before.

Comments:  Zdarsky is really putting the focus of Spectacular on both Teresa and Jameson, shown by their prominence in this new story. Whether it’s working or not is probably debatable.

32 PGS./ALL-AGES …$3.99

Comments: It’s good to see Marvel bringing in younger readers, especially for a female audience and with some of the more obscure heroes. However the most intriguing part of this is the renaming of Spider-Gwen to Ghost Spider, perhaps foreshadowing a similar switch in the comics.

  1. I was loving RENEW YOUR VOWS for the first eleven issues. Issue #12 was an incredibly rushed and lackluster finale to the whole Normie Osborn conflict and greatly disappointed me.

As for the time skip, I’m not a fan of it. In fairness, Jody Houser has done a pretty decent job on the title, but she is nowhere near Gerry Conway’s level in my opinion. So while I’m still enjoying the series overall, I wouldn’t really shed any tears if it were cancelled. It just doesn’t have the same appeal for me that it once did.

All that being said, I’d take it any day over what Dan Slott has been doing on AMAZING for the past several years.

  2. I see both sides of the RYV argument. I’m not exactly happy with the current direction of the book, but I’m willing to stick around out of brand loyalty because if the title dies, Marvel will use it as an excuse to say that a married Spider-Man doesn’t work. Regardless, the quality has significantly gone done and with three different writers over the course of 13 issues, the tonal inconsistency is uncannily noticeable. So I’ll trade-wait and feel satisfied on that front.

As for some of the other titles.
Miles- Haven’t cared since Miles went to Japan. The Bombshells are more interesting than him at this point.

Spider-Gwen- Now that Robbi Rodriguez is leaving the series, I think it’s okay for the book to end. While Gwen’s an interesting character and all, Rodriguez’s art set the style for the book and without him, the magic would be gone.

Iron Man- Pick it up for Caselli’s art. I gave up reading a while back.

Scarlet Spider- I think I can actually explain this one @James Hynes. Damnation is (supposedly?) taking place in Las Vegas, and so I guess they want the resident superhero (In this case, Scarlet Spider) to show the ground-level reaction. Regardless, I stopped caring.

Avengers- Bland. Larraz and Medina are carrying this book for the writing team.

As for ASM? Well, I’ll talk more about it when the issues themselves come out and give a more fleshed-out point of view.

But, hopefully, Slott doesn’t fridge all of these characters (Flash and Cindy, who became heroes under his pen) who have gotten great runs outside of his own pen just to clean the slate for the next writer.

  3. @WolfCypher: That Sandman issue was my favorite of the first 12 issues. I wish we could’ve gotten more like it.

  4. @David Griffin @WolfCypher I can see both of your points, as enjoyment of a comic is subjective. I for the most part enjoyed the initial 12-issue run of RYV, with a few exceptions (notably the lackluster finale). It is because I think 8-yr old Annie had a lot to offer that I was a little annoyed by the time skip and as a result I think it colored my reading of the 8-years later story. However there were other reasons – I felt the new creative team didn’t deliver as strong a story as what we’d previously gotten. I am, however, willing to give the book another go with the ‘Fast Times at Midtown High’ story.

As for our blind hatred of Dan Slott, I actually enjoyed most of his work up until Pete’s return and even then I enjoyed Spider-Verse, the original Renew Your Vows and a couple of issues of Worldwide. But as a whole I felt his stories declined in quality after Superior and his portrayal of Peter just felt really off. However I think Slott’s Silver Surfer is one of the best books Marvel has put out in years.

  5. Ill take it a step further. Even before the time skip, this book lost me. I dropped it at the start of that Venom-MJ. Save for the one-and-done Sandman/Chucky Cheese issue, I haven’t liked any of RYV. I really think you guys will just support anything that isnt Dan Slott. I fail to see how this book is so defended heavily around here.

  6. I don’t get this nonsense about RYV retreading old ground. The only simularity is Annie is a teenager, everything else has’nt been done before with the Spider-family. Stop talking crap and putting this great book down. Frankly, how anyone thinks eight year old child endangerment is an interesting angle needs to see a therapist

If this book is axed, I’ll know who to blame.
