Spider-Man Cosplay #4! Featuring Spiderling! (LilHQCosplay)!

Spider-Man Crawlspace
PROUDLY PRESENTS

Greetings Crawlspacers!  Welcome to the fourth edition to Spider-Man Cosplay!  The article on the front page that deals with interviews that I conduct featuring people who cosplay in Spider-Man themed costumes.  If it’s Spidey-themed and love for the character I’ll find it and publish here right on the front page!!

This edition, is just too adorable.  I really shouldn’t say this, since this kid is trained in martial arts.  I had the pleasure of working with this girl when doing a Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows photo shoot.  Little HQ is the next generation of cosplayers to come and she’s just starting to get warmed up.  Her parents are 110% supportive of this girl and they helped out with this interview.  Don’t be fooled though, her parents may have helped her out with the wording, but all the answers came from “Little HQ” herself!

ME: So let’s get started!  HEY KIDDO!  Great hearing from you again!
LILHQ: Hi Pete!!
ME: So, tell me…what drew you into Spider-Man and when was that?
LILHQ: Spiderling received her super-hero name a year ago. I was about the same age as Annie May when that happened. I liked her hair and her first costume because of the helmet and armor. But I love the older version because I can stuff candy in my purse (that is part of the costume).
ME: What does Spider-Man mean to you?
LILHQ:  I most identify with Spiderling right now. She is like me. She is strong, sassy, nice, and at times,… a pain in the butt to her parents. She helps people. I like to help people. I wish I could do all the things she can. It looks fun. For starters, I would win at Hide and Seek and Tag… cause I would be on the ceiling.ME: Do you have a favorite Spidey writers and artists?
LILHQ: Ryan Stenman and Gerry Conway. I actually met Ryan. It was super-exciting. He didn’t know anyone had dressed up as Spiderling. Someone found me at the convention and brought me over to meet him. He was really nice. He even gave me one of the pages he drew for the comic book. I have it on the wall in my bedroom. It was the page that shows Spiderling suiting up.ME: Was there a favorite issue or story arc you like? Can you tell us why?
LILHQ: I liked issue 3 of Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows. It was the first issue that I read. My dad was upset with me because I kept it in my bed to read before I fell asleep. I was just so excited to read about a character my age.

ME: Is there any merchandise you hold dear to you that represents your love for the character besides your Cosplay?
LILHQ: Sadly, there isn’t any merchandise with Spiderling on it. More the reason I love my Spiderling comic page. But with my birthday money, I got a Spider-Gwen necklace and ring. The necklace is her head in the hood. And the ring is really cool because it is Spider-Gwen’s eyes.

ME: Speaking of which, let’s get into that! Spiderling is one of your spider themed cosplay. What was that like designing the costume and did the costume present any hurdles to you when making it. What drew you into cosplaying that character?
LILHQ: My dad made and painted the armor and helmet. My mom bought the unitard and extra pieces. My grandma made the vinyl designs for the unitard. It was a team project. This was my dad’s first time working with foam and my grandma’s first time putting vinyl on a unitard. There were some setbacks, but we all love how it came out. I do remember my parents arguing over the lenses for my helmet.
ME: That’s too funny!
LILHQ: My dad wanted it to look as close to the comic as possible, but my mom was worried I would be tripping over people at the comic convention. I tried out like five sets of lenses before we picked one. Ultimately, I was excited to try this cosplay because I liked the character and this was my first cosplay with armor. All my other cosplays were mostly fabric based. And this one I got to feel more like the character.

ME: You suited up for the first time and ready to walk on out of the floor. What was that like and how did that feel?
LILHQ: I was really excited. My dad made a metal web that fit in my hand. So when I pointed it at people taking pictures, it looks like I am webbing them. I was webbing everything… the parking sign, my mom, my dad’s face… To add to all of that excitement, our first activity at the con was to go get a picture with Stan Lee!

ME: Sometimes a costume you cosplay as defines you, because you represent it so much. Has anyone ever called you “Annie” or “Spiderling” while out of costume?
LILHQ: Definitely!! My friend Gwensday Adams calls me Spiderling or Annie May all the time!
ME: Your “Spider-Mom”!
LILHQ: MY SPIDER-MOM!

ME: Any cool stories you wish to share while dressing up and walking around as Spiderling?
LILHQ: One night, my family and Gwensday Adams all went to Chicago. We went to Navy Pier and walked around in costume. We took some pictures and heard some moms with their kids talking about how cute and tough we looked. The best part is that when we left, we went to Molly’s cupcakes in Chicago. I just like the frosting. They gave me frosting with gummy bears in it!!!! In the restaurant they have these swings that are seats at the counter. We took some more pictures there. The picture of me with a chalkboard behind me is from Molly’s. We were goofing off and had a lot of fun. I webbed the guy that was bringing my frosting.

ME: This is a Spider-Man site, but I’m sure people would like to know. What other cosplay costumes have you done?
LILHQ: I have done quite a few. I was Harley Quinn as a baby. I was Black Canary, Supergirl and Batgirl as a toddler. I can’t remember the entire order, but I was Firestar, Raven, Miss Martian, She-Hulk, classic Black Canary, Rocket Raccoon, Princess Peach, Elsa, Roller Derby Harley Quinn, Squirrel Girl, Rey, Han Solo, and Wasp. And I have a Spiderling 2.0 (her costume when she is older).

ME: You don’t have to say Spiderling, but which costume is your favorite to dress up as?
LILHQ: Roller Derby Harley Quinn. I got to be on skates and sail around the convention with my hammer.

ME: Have you ever considered dressing up as another spidey themed character?
LILHQ: I’m working on a Kraven the Hunter costume now. It’s pretty cool since the current Kraven is a girl that is about 12 years old. And some time in the future, I want to do a Spider-Gwen cosplay. Recently, I have been thinking about doing a Spider-Man Homecoming cosplay.

ME: Have you ever heard or visited the Crawlspace (this site)?
LILHQ: I just recently heard about it and was looking at it with my parents. It looks cool.
