Sony is betting the Venom movie will be a hit so they can bring more Spider-characters to film. Variety has an interesting article about all the films in development at Sony under the Spider-Man contract. Evidently the Silver and Black film has been scrapped and will instead be two separate movies. One with Black Cat and the other with Silver Sable The films in production include:
- Black Cat
- Silver Sable
- Kraven the Hunter
- Jackpot
- Nightwatch
- Morbius
- Silk
“We’re focused on being faithful to the comics,” said Sanford Panitch, president of Columbia Pictures, and the executive who has been overseeing what is being dubbed internally, Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters, or SUMC. “We believe Black Cat is enough of her own character with a great backstory and a canon of material to draw from to justify her own film. Spider-Man connects to a lot of the characters. There are villains, heroes, and antiheroes, and a lot are female characters, many of whom are bona fide, fully dimensionalized, and utterly unique,”said Panitch “We feel there’s no reason the Marvel characters shouldn’t be able to embrace diversity,” he added.
The article says that the Spider-Man contract consists of 900 Marvel characters. So hypothetically we could see an Aunt May film, a Carlie Cooper film and a Deb Whitman film. What are your thoughts on these seven films in development?
Sony is getting really, really desperate.
I sorta understand why Sony is giving Black Cat, Venom and Kraven solo movies… but Silk? Nightwatch? JACKPOT?! Some of these are guaranteed box office bombs!
