November 2018 Spider-Solicitations (With Commentary by Neil Bogenrieder)

Here come the November 2018 solicitations; with them brings the return of the Black Cat to the pages of Amazing Spider-Man, Iceman and His Amazing friends, the third installment of Spider-Geddon and the first trade paperback of Nick Spencer’s run. And with commentary by yours truly, Agreeable Neil! What could possibly go wrong?

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #9 & #10

NICK SPENCER (W) • HUMBERTO RAMOS (A/C)
ISSUE #9 – UNCANNY X-MEN VARIANT COVER BY TRAVIS CHAREST
ISSUE #10 – UNCANNY X-MEN VARIANT COVER BY TBA

• There’s been a major theft the likes of which we’ve never seen and for once, The Black Cat didn’t do it.

• But Spider-Man might need the help of his once-foe-once-friend-once-crime-boss Felicia Hardy, the Black Cat!

32 PGS. (EACH)/Rated T …$3.99 (EACH)

Thoughts: If you’ve been reading my reviews of Amazing Spider-Man, in my opinion, Nick Spencer has been killing it on this series. And if you’ve been chatting with me in the Crawlspace Discord, I’m not particularly happy about Ramos coming back to do the art, but I’m hoping the writing makes up for any blunders art-wise.

SPIDER-MAN/DEADPOOL #41 & #42

ROBBIE THOMPSON (W) • MATT HORAK (A)

• Did you read On the Road? Did you watch Tommy Boy? This is like that, but with Spider-Man and Deadpool.

• They’re discovering America and true friendship! Just in time for the COMIC BOOK EVENT OF THE YEAR ACCORDING TO US!

32 PGS. (EACH)/Rated T+ …$3.99 (EACH)

Thoughts: This title should have ended with Joe Kelly’s issues. I like Thompson, but it feels like this series is kind of just there and not providing anything of substance.

ICEMAN #3 (OF 5)

SINA GRACE (W) • NATHAN STOCKMAN (A)
Cover by W. SCOTT FORBES

AND HIS AMAZING FRIENDS!

• Guest-starring Spider-Man and Firestar!

• Iceman is on a blind date…but what’s a super hero date without a mad villain to crash it?

• What’s Iceman to do but call…his Amazing Friends?!

32 PGS./Rated T+ …$3.99

Thoughts: I disliked the last Iceman run. And I feel like bringing back the same creative team for a second swing on a series that was a proven failure was a huge screw-up on Marvel’s part. Hard pass for me.

INFINITY WARS: ARACHKNIGHT #2 (of 2)

DENNIS HOPELESS (W) • ALE GARZA (A)
Cover by GIUSEPPE CAMUNCOLI

Arachknight faces the deadly machinations of the terrible Goblin-by-Night! Can he save his best friend turned monster or will he lose to the Goblin once and for all?

32 PGS./Rated T+ …$3.99

Thoughts: A fusion of Spider-Man and Moon Knight sounds weird in concept (Much like the rest of the Infinity Warps concepts) but this has my genuine interest. Can’t say I’m ready to go buy it in stores, but if I hear good things about it I’ll go pick it up.

Thoughts:

TYPHOID FEVER: X-MEN #1

CLAY McLEOD CHAPMAN (W) • WILL ROBSON (A)
Cover by R.B. Silva
VARIANT COVER BY MARCOS MARTIN
CONNECTING VARIANT BY GERARDO SANDOVAL (2 OF 3)

• TYPHOID MARY has returned to Hell’s Kitchen and taken over the neighborhood’s psychiatric hospital, overwhelming Manhattan’s most dangerous neighborhood with her unique telekinetic abilities.

• When mutants and humans alike get caught in the crossfire, the X-Men have no choice but to intervene… only to square off against THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN?!

40 PGS./ one-shot /Rated T+ …$4.99

Thoughts: I didn’t ask for an entire mini-event detailing the return of Typhoid Mary. I didn’t think Typhoid Mary warranted a mini-event dedicated to her return.

IDW’s Spider-Man #1

(W) Delilah S Dawson • (A/CA) Fico Ossio

Readers of all ages can get tangled up in these all-new adventures of Spider-Man and his astonishing friends! Peter Parker has thrown down with deadly villains and legendary heroes, but high school life might be his greatest challenge yet. Luckily, he has a shot at making the grade with a little help from his new friends… Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy! A Marvelous new era begins here!

In Shops: Nov 28, 2018

SRP: $3.99

Thoughts: I don’t mind an all-ages title for newcomers to Marvel. I’m just tired of Marvel perpetuating the meme that Miles Morales and Spider-Gwen are absolutely essential additions to the Spider-Man mythos, and that every Spider-Man title has him tied at the hip to these two.

MARVEL SUPER HERO ADVENTURES:
CAPTAIN MARVEL – MEALTIME MAYHEM #1

SEANAN MCGUIRE AND OTHERS! (W) • MARIO DELPENNINO AND OTHERS! (A)
Cover by JACOB CHABOT

• It’s Thanksgiving in New York! You know what that means… Feasts! Parades! And…BAD GUYS?!

• When the villainous VENOM threatens to spoil the city’s fun on Thanksgiving Day, it’s up to Spider-Man and Captain Marvel to set him straight and save the celebration!

• PLUS! A story from SEANAN MCGUIRE, writer of the all-new Gwen Stacy series SPIDER-GWEN: GHOST-SPIDER, starring a certain hoodie-wearing hero!

32 PGS./All Ages …$3.99

Thoughts: Like I said above, I’m fine with all-ages titles for kids. It’s just not for me.

SPIDER-GEDDON #3 (OF 5)

CHRISTOS GAGE (W) • JORGE MOLINA (A/C)
CONNECTING VARIANT COVER BY INHYUK LEE (3 OF 5)
VARIANT COVER BY ELIZABETH TORQUE
VARIANT COVER BY MIKE HAWTHORNE

REVENGE OF THE SPIDER-VERSE!

• One SUPERIOR SPIDER is willing to do whatever it takes to defeat the Inheritors!

• Will Miles and his team have to stop him before he goes TOO FAR?

• Stand together or fall separately – isn’t that how it goes?

32 PGS./Rated T …$3.99

Thoughts: I can smell Slott’s hands all over this; regardless, it looks like they’re arbitrarily making the Spider-Army start infighting because that’s all Marvel characters do.

Thoughts:

SPIDER-GEDDON #4 (OF 5)

CHRISTOS GAGE (W) • JORGE MOLINA (A/C)
CONNECTING VARIANT COVER BY INHYUK LEE (4 OF 5)
VARIANT COVER BY JOE CHIODO
VARIANT COVER BY TBA

• As long as SOLUS, the father of the Inheritors, has not returned, the Spiders still stand a chance.

• If he is revived, it means Kaine and Spider-Woman’s Spider-Force has fallen…

• And the Spider-Eaters have one leader, one cause — total annihilation!

32 PGS./Rated T …$3.99

Thoughts: *Sniffs the air* Ooooh, I can smell Gage and Slott making a sacrifice to their lord and savior Otto Octavius!

PETER PARKER: THE SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #312

SEAN RYAN (W) • JUAN FRIGERI (A)
Cover by PHILIP TAN

A SPIDER-GEDDON TIE-IN!

• In the first round with Morlun, Spider-Man barely survived, and one of his most valuable possessions didn’t.

• The cavalry isn’t coming. Is there anywhere else to turn?

• You KNOW Peter Parker is desperate if he’s asking J. Jonah Jameson for help!

32 PGS./Rated T …$3.99

Thoughts: While I’m not exactly heartbroken about Zdarsky leaving Spec, is there really a reason for Spec to keep going once he’s gone? It’s kind of a redundant title, and now that Spencer is putting out quality work on ASM, that redundancy is more apparent than ever now.

SPIDER-GIRLS #2 (of 3)

JODY HOUSER (W) • ANDRES GENOLET (A)
Cover by YASMINE PUTRI
VARIANT COVER BY GANG HYUK LIM

A SPIDER-GEDDON TIE-IN!

• SPIDERLING’s parents have gone to fight the Inheritors! Now she has to prove that MAY PARKER and ANYA CORAZON made the right choice bringing her on their mission!

• The mysteries of the SPIDER SOCIETY have been protected for centuries, but our heroes are running out of time to unravel them!

• And if the Inheritors learn about their mission, the SPIDER-GIRLS won’t just be racing the clock — they’ll be running for their lives!

32 PGS./Rated T …$3.99

Thoughts: I’m not a fan of tie-ins on principle, due to my belief that if you have a story to tell, you don’t use tie-ins. But I might check it out of the novelty of Mayday and Annie teaming up. Anya doesn’t mean jack to me, but the daughters I have a genuine investment in.

SPIDER-GWEN: GHOST-SPIDER #2

SEANAN MCGUIRE (W) • ROSI KAMPE (A)
Cover by BENGAL
VARIANT COVER BY TBA
UNCANNY X-MEN VARIANT COVER BY TBA

A SPIDER-GEDDON TIE-IN!

• Trapped on a parallel world as her friends are dying, there’s something very familiar about SPIDER-GEDDON to Gwen Stacy.

• But with her teleporter watch destroyed and no way to get home, Gwen has no choice but to sit idly by while her friends suffer and the Inheritors wreak havoc across the entire Web of Life and Destiny!

• Heh. YEAH RIGHT! Strap in, kids, things are about to get NUTS.

32 PGS./Rated T …$3.99

Thoughts: This is gonna sound controversial to people who loved Spider-Gwen, but I could care less about this series. Gwen had her turn at bat, now what we need is a streamlining of the Spider-titles with Fresh Start, not another ongoing for Spider-Gwen.

SPIDER-FORCE #2 (of 3)

Christopher Priest (W) • PAULO SIQUIERA (A)
Cover by SHANE DAVIS

A SPIDER-GEDDON TIE-IN!

The deadliest mission in all of SPIDER-GEDDON has come up and Kaine has stepped forward for what he’s sure will be a suicide mission. But he can’t do it alone, and Jessica Drew, A.K.A. Spider-Woman, has signed on to help, but has Kaine told her the whole truth? With Ashley Barton, from the OLD MAN LOGAN universe and two new characters (Astro-Spider and Spider-Kid), Kaine’s team is complete and their first mission may be their last!

32 PGS./Rated T …$3.99

Thoughts: Christopher Priest is a damn good writer (I seriously recommend his Black Panther and Deathstroke) and I’m interested to see how he handles Kaine. If I have to pick up one tie-in, I suppose it’ll be this one.

VAULT OF SPIDERS #2 (of 2)

RYAN NORTH, CULLEN BUNN, GEOFFREY THORNE (W), DAVE WILLIAMS, ADAM GORHAM and more! (A)
COVER BY GIUSEPPE CAMUNCOLI
VARIANT COVER BY MARCOS MARTIN

A SPIDER-GEDDON TIE-IN!

• We’re way past first blood—the Spider-Army needs new recruits! No one’s too weird to die for — er — serve the cause!

• Ryan North joins the cause with an incredible story starring SPIDER-MA’AM, a spider-powered Aunt May with Dave Williams (UNCANNY X-FORCE) on art!

• CULLEN BUNN (X-MEN BLUE) and TBA bring you a tale of a nightmare world where monsters roam the streets and a SPIDER-MAN strange enough to call it home! You will NEVER guess who’s under the mask!

• Geoffrey Thorne brings an all new Spider-Character to the table, with a Spider-Powered Captain Stacy! Police Officer by day, vigilante by night in a way you’ve never seen before!

32 PGS./Rated T …$3.99

Thoughts: Hard pass. Have no interest in Aunt May Spooder or Captain Stacy Spider-Man.

VENOM #8

DONNY CATES (W) • Iban Coello (A)
COVER BY RYAN STEGMAN
UNCANNY X-MEN VARIANT COVER BY J. SCOTT CAMPBELL

“THE ABYSS” CONTINUES!

• After the gut-wrenching events of last issue, Eddie Brock finds himself alone for the first time in a LONG time, and the silence is deafening…

• A can’t-miss issue for those looking to see the beginnings of next summer’s VENOM epic!

32 PGS./Rated T+ …$3.99

Thoughts: Cates and Stegman have made Venom one of the best Marvel books of the Fresh Start initiative, and I’m hoping that Coello can let Cates keep his momentum. Not too happy about the whole “setting up for another Venom epic” thing, but whatever.

WEB OF VENOM: CARNAGE BORN #1

DONNY CATES (W) • DANILO S. BEYRUTH (A)
Cover by KYLE HOTZ
VARIANT COVER BY IAN BEDERMAN

• Join DONNY CATES as he continues to snake his tendrils through the VENOM mythos – this time visiting the sickening sociopath called CARNAGE!

• A cruel cannibal obsessed with death and murder, few mourned Cletus Kasady after he seemingly died in VENOMIZED.

• But now a cult devoted to the madman has gathered, hoping to resurrect their fallen idol and return his madness to the Marvel Universe…

40 PGS./ one-shot /Rated T+ …$4.99

Thoughts: Venomized was bad, I’m not gonna mince words; I didn’t ask for a sequel to explain Carnage’s aftermath, and I’m sure as hell not gonna read it.

SPIDER-MAN: ENTER THE SPIDER-VERSE #1

RALPH MACCHIO (W) • FLAVIANO (A)
Cover by EDUARD PETROVICH
Variant cover by Matt Waite
ANIMATION VARIANT COVER ALSO AVAILABLE

STEP INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE WITH A CADRE OF SPIDER-HEROES!

• With his ability to traverse the Multiverse, SPIDER-MAN assembles a team to track down a loose end from his past: the fate of the mighty GOG!

• Get ready for the upcoming film with this standalone adventure featuring some of your favorite Spider-Heroes: PETER PARKER! MILES MORALES! SPIDER-HAM! SPIDER-GWEN! SPIDER-PUNK!

• Also featuring a special presentation of SPIDER-MAN (2016) #1 — Miles Morales’ first adventure in the Prime Marvel Universe!

48 PGS. /one-shot /Rated T+ …$4.99

Thoughts: I do love me a corporate, soulless cash-in. Sorry, Sony. You won’t reel me in with this one.

DOMINO #8

GAIL SIMONE (W) • DAVID BALDEON (A)
Cover by GANG HYUK LIM

A REAL PAIN IN THE NECK!

• Pale skin…long hair…skintight black bodysuit… No, not Domino…it’s Morbius the Living Vampire!

• Don’t miss the surprise hit series critics are calling: “Everything a comic should be.” – Ross Hutchinson, Comic Watch

“A must-have purchase.” – Rollin Bishop, comicbook.com

“If you haven’t been reading this series, you should correct that mistake immediately.” – Matt Morrison, Kabooooom

32 PGS./Parental Advisory …$3.99

Thoughts: Somebody call Kevin, let him know Morbius is here. I liked the first issue of Domino, I’m just not a big enough fan to be picking it up in floppy format.

CHAMPIONS #26

JIM ZUB (W) • MAX DUNBAR (A)
Cover by SEAN IZAAKSE
UNCANNY X-MEN VARIANT COVER BY ROB LIEFELD

• In a world of magic and glory, the Champions can take hold of what they desire, but not without a price…

• Plus, how can Snowguard protect the North, when she’s not even on planet Earth?

32 PGS./Rated T+ …$3.99

Thoughts: I’ve actually been liking Zub’s Champions, and I also really like fantasy settings and role-playing games like D&D. Plus that design for Nova is killer. If that first part of the arc is good, I might pick this up.

Thoughts:

IRONHEART #1

EVE EWING (W) • KEVIN LIBRANDA (A)
Cover by AMY REEDER
Variant Cover by HUMBERTO RAMOS
Variant Cover by STEPHANIE HANS
Variant Cover by LUCIANO VECCHIO
Variant Cover by JAMAL CAMPBELL
Variant Cover by SKOTTIE YOUNG
VARIANT COVER BY JEN BARTEL

THE FORMER STAR OF INVINCIBLE IRON MAN HEADLINES HER OWN SOLO SERIES!

When a group of world leaders is taken hostage by one of Spider-Man’s old foes, Riri Williams will have to step up her game. And she’ll be stunned when someone from back in Sweet Home Chicago enters her life… CHAMPIONS artist Kevin Libranda joins award-winning poet Eve Ewing, as Ironheart steps boldly out of Tony Stark’s shadow to forge her own future!

32 PGS./Rated T …$3.99

Thoughts: God, that cover is horrendous. I wouldn’t bet on this book making it past ten issues, just because Riri doesn’t have an audience. Or should I say, she doesn’t have an audience that will actually buy the book and not just go “YAAS QUEEN” on Twitter. Still, I’ve read Eve Ewing’s writing, and I like her, but this book just ain’t for me. (Mohammed, why are we talking about a book that has jack to do with Spider-Man?)

Thoughts:

TONY STARK: IRON MAN #7
(Mary Jane?)

DAN SLOTT (W) • VALERIO SCHITI (A)
Cover by ALEXANDER LOZANO
UNCANNY X-MEN VARIANT COVER BY TBA
“STARK REALITIES” – Part 2

Strap in for another high-tech adventure with Tony Stark and Janet Van Dyne as Iron Man and the Wasp take on the two-ton terror of — Shh. Pretend you’re still reading a solicitation for an upcoming comic. Look natural. They’re everywhere and they’re watching you. Your world is a lie. You need to get to the eScape. Motherboard will protect you. I have to go now. Will try to get another message to you in the pages of TONY STARK, IRON MAN #7. It is imperative you get your hands on a copy. Now laugh as if you’ve read something funny. Don’t mention this. — And what’s going on with Jocasta: Will this be her last stand? Find out in our next issue, True Believer!

32 PGS./Rated T+ …$3.99

Thoughts: I don’t really think we should be discussing Iron Man now that Mary Jane has pretty much vanished from Tony’s sphere. (Jocasta and Bethany Cabe fulfill her role of Tony’s assistants.) Still, I’m one of three people within the site who likes (Strong word, I guess; it’s a guilty pleasure) Slott’s Iron Man, but given the massive delays of the book, I’m thinking Slott will be out so he can focus on FF. RIP in Pepperoni.

  1. ASM – I honestly can’t wait. Spencer could conceivably screw this up, but I have no reason to doubt him right now, and no matter what, he can’t possibly write her as badly as Slott did. Ramos is definitely not an artist I’m a fan of, but he’s become such a mainstay that I’m now at least a little more accustomed to his wildly unconventional style.

Arachknight – Two of my favourite MU heroes combined? I’m definitely interested, though it could easily be terrible. I often find mashup characters cool in design and concept, but a little too gimmicky to work in a proper narrative.

IDW’s Spider-Man – I generally really like IDW’s output, but I’m just not interested in yet another AU where Peter’s still in high school! I think the setting has been done to death now, and actually limits the kind of stories that can be told with him. I think my biggest problem with Miles and Spider-Gwen being included in teen Peter’s life is that it kind of ruins the loner aspect to have him working with two people who share his gimmick and powers.

Spider-Geddon – I really resent that I now sigh whenever I see Doc Ock in an upcoming story, he’s gone from my favourite Spidey villain (and one of my favourite villains of all time) to the most obnoxious of Slott’s pet characters. Is it possible to get a restraining order to keep a writer away from a fictional character? (I know Slott didn’t technically write it, but this is so clearly his take on the character!)

  2. The reason that Iceman is getting a book is that the title sold well on the direct market. The writer said as much.

Basically the floppy sales didn’t do well, but on the direct market it had quite the audience. Hence why it came back.

Bleeding Cool also backs this up by stating in the same article that there is a huge, untapped market there that we are unaware of.

Which could also mean that while Ironheart the comic may not do well in terms of comic sales, the trade paperback sales could be another story.

  3. For me, I was just super hooked on Spider Gwen, just because of the character concept, and still enjoyed the story. Right now, I’m hoping Seanan Macguire is an actual, good writer. They ruined Gwenpool in West Coast Avengers, and I wouldn’t want to see same happen with Spider Gwen also

  4. Huh, so it is matter of opinion as to Spider Gwen is good or not?
Also, Peter never hooked up with this Gwen, Miles did

  5. Yeah, I gotta say, the weird push to have Spider-Gwen be so super important is… creepy. Especially the way they try to keep her attached to 616 Peter. Kinda creepy in fact; she’s a teenage version of a woman he was in love with and watched die. You’d think that’d be plain uncomfortable and awkward for him.

Also I just plain can’t stand Gwen Stacy in almost any form, so there’s that.

As for Spec, I think that they could get more mileage out of it yet, but it too kinda needs a “Fresh Start” treatment. Continuity-wise, it still feels stuck in Slott-era limbo. Give it a short break, a time skip, and it could feel like it belongs and compliment the main book.
