February 2019 Spider-Solicitations (With Commentary by Neil Bogenrieder)

Walloping Websnappers, true believers! It’s Agreeable Neil, here to peruse with you the (three months late) solicits for books this month! I’m filling in for our regular guy, and I’ll hopefully doing these back-to-back for March and April, and hopefully things will keep at that pace. As long as I comment on solicits, I make this vow! (Just kidding, if I make commitments I open myself up to disappointing people.) Onwards!

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #15

NICK SPENCER (W) • CHRIS BACHALO (A) • PAOLO RIVERA (CA)

SKRULLS VARIANT COVER BY LEE GARBETT

• Aunt May is in danger and only Spider-Man can help her… • …You think you know where a story like this is going, but you DON’T. • Because Taskmaster and Black Ant are on the scene, and they don’t have a problem with collateral damage.

32 PGS./Rated T …$3.99

Comments: Spencer has been hitting this run out of the park so far, though Chris Bachalo is kind of a deterrent for this issue. (Particularly given his work on Spec and his preview for ASM #14. Regardless, more Taskmaster and Black Ant is a welcome plus, and I hope that regardless of the art we get some writing to carry the book.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #16

NICK SPENCER (W) • RYAN OTTLEY (A) • CULLY HAMNER (CA)

CAPTAIN MARVEL VARIANT COVER BY MIKE HAWTHORNE

THE ROAD TO “HUNTED” STARTS HERE!

• The biggest AMAZING SPIDER-MAN story of the year starts next month, so don’t miss this prologue! • The Kraven thread gets woven into Spider-Man’s life in a terrifying way that puts Spidey on the road to ruin!

32 PGS./Rated T …$3.99

Comments: Ottley coming back will be a welcome return in preparation for Hunted, and working with the previous issue to tie up the Lizard family subplot.

FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD SPIDER-MAN #3

TOM TAYLOR (W) • JUANN CABAL (A) • ANDREW C. ROBINSON (CA)

• Spider-Man heads to a part of the Marvel Universe that you’ve never seen before! • It’s always fun to see Spider-Man out of his element. Well, for YOU, anyway. Spidey doesn’t agree. • And when “out of his element” is in a place that doesn’t support human life? Uh-oh!

32 PGS./Rated T …$3.99

Comments: Taylor’s entry to Spider-Man was a pleasant knock out of the park, especially considering my love/hate relationship with his bibliography. Looking at the imagery in this cover, if he’s going where I think he’s going (And for all I know, that’s where he’s actually going) he’s got my full support.

SPIDER-MAN/DEADPOOL #46

ROBBIE THOMPSON (W) • MATT HORAK (A) • DAVE JOHNSON (CA)

• The “INFINITE HOUSE OF CIVIL yet SECRET CRISIS WAR INVASIONS” begins here! • The BIGGEST arc of SPIDER-MAN/DEADPOOL kicks off this month and will shake the foundations of the Marvel Universe! • Nothing will ever be the same after this issue! NOTHING! • Spider-Man and Deadpool just BARELY make it back from the Negative Zone in the middle of an Event that the Marvel U’s heroes have already lost.

32 PGS./Rated T+ …$3.99

Comments: All I can really say is that this book is kind of there. It’s spinning its wheels until it hits issue 50, then it’ll quietly slink off back into the darkness or just end entirely.

FROM IDW PUBLISHING

MARVEL ACTION SPIDER-MAN #4

ERIK BURNHAM (W) • CHRISTOPHER JONES (A/CA)

An all-new storyline begins here! Now that Peter, Miles, and Gwen have joined forces, nothing can stop them! Except maybe for homework and an internship at the Daily Bugle. Not to mention a new villain in their midst… All-new web-slinging action in the Mighty Marvel Manner!

FC • 32 pages • $3.99

Comments: While I don’t really care for the Peter/Miles/Gwen team-up right out of the gate, I’ve heard good things about the IDW-outsourced run from fans who aren’t as dedicated to the character as I am. Regardless, I could care less, and I think the sales numbers indicate a shared feeling of apathy.

MARVEL SUPER HERO ADVENTURES: SPIDER-MAN – WEB OF INTRIGUE #1

JEFF LOVENESS AND MORE! (W) • MARIO DELPENNINO AND MORE! (A) • JACOB CHABOT (CA)

• Power is a great responsibility but it’s a weight easier carried with friends! • So, what happens when your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man meets up with his favorite Spider-Pals, Miles, Gwen and Anya? • Hijinks, hilarity and heroism of course!

32 PGS./All Ages …$3.99

Comments: Jeff Loveness is a knock-out writer. But that cover doesn’t inspire confidence for me, and neither does the fact that it’s an all-ages book. (Which isn’t a bad thing; it just isn’t for me.)

SPIDER-GWEN: GHOST-SPIDER #5

SEANAN McGUIRE (W) • TAKESHI MIYAZAWA (A) • BENGAL (CA)

SKRULLS VARIANT COVER BY PASQUAL FERRY

In the aftermath of “Spider-Geddon”, Gwen is ready for her life to calm down — but when is life ever calm for a teenage super hero? Mary Jane’s perfectionist vision for their band is driving Gwen crazy, while Gwen’s father is pressuring her to return to school. Add that to the daily trials and responsibility that come with being a web-slinging super hero, and you’ve got a recipe for a whole new era of radioactive adventure!

32 PGS./Rated T …$3.99

Comments: This book suffered from being a tie-in to Spider-Geddon right out of the gate, and I don’t think its ever going to truly recover. There’s been one issue I truly enjoyed, but the other three were passes for me. Not a good track record, from my perspective.

MILES MORALES: SPIDER-MAN #3

SALADIN AHMED (W) • JAVIER GARRÓN (A) • Marco D’Alfonso (CA)

VARIANT COVER BY SANA TAKEDA CONCEPT VARIANT COVER BY TBA

• CAPTAIN AMERICA guest-stars! • Miles and Cap try to get to the bottom of the mystery of the missing kids, but it’s not quite that simple. • A new villain has our heroes’ number, and you won’t believe how they get out of this jam!

32 PGS./Rated T+ …$3.99

Comments: From what I can tell, I’m in the minority since I actually really like this book, as a huge step up from how Bendis wrote the character for the last three years.

VENOM #11

DONNY CATES (W) • RYAN STEGMAN (A/C)

VARIANT COVER BY DAVE GIBBONS SKRULLS VARIANT COVER BY TBA

• The sinister symbiote skulks the streets of San Francisco! • With the symbiote silenced and Eddie finding parts of his memory missing, will he be able to find the answers he’s looking for in the Golden City? • Or will the return to his old stomping grounds reveal secrets better left buried?

32 PGS./Rated T+ …$3.99

Comments: Cates and Stegman have been arguably the premier creative team at Marvel since the Fresh Start relaunch. I love Spencer’s run on ASM with Ottley more, but Cates and Stegman have been together more often and have a greater synergy. This is one of the two books that, in my opinion, you have to pick up from the Spider-lineup.

SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN #3

CHRISTOS GAGE (W) • MIKE HAWTHORNE (A) • TRAVIS CHAREST (CA)

CAPTAIN MARVEL VARIANT COVER BY JESUS SAIZ

• Outpowered and outclassed by Terrax, Otto Octavius somehow turns himself into the COSMICALLY POWERED SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN! • This may not be enough to defeat Terrax, but if so, is the world ready for an Otto Octavius with this level of power?!

32 PGS./Rated T …$3.99

Comments: Another book I’m in the minority on, but I’m loving the balls-to-the-walls energy of the book, and I think Gage was the best choice to carry on the title after Spider-Geddon. (I think he genuinely does understand SpOck more than Slott ever did)

CHAMPIONS #2

JIM ZUB (W) • STEVEN CUMMINGS (A) • KIM JACINTO (CA)

CAPTAIN MARVEL VARIANT COVER BY PEPE LARRAZ

• When the dream is at stake, everything you believe in and have fought dearly for, what would you be willing to sacrifice to keep it alive? • One of the Champions has made a choice that will haunt them for the rest of their days… And now the villain behind that decision has everything they need to shatter the next generation of heroes. • Jim Zub (AVENGERS: NO SURRENDER, UNCANNY AVENGERS) and Steven Cummings (Wayward, Legends of the Dark Knight) take the Champions into uncharted territory, and the team will never be the same.

32 PGS./Rated T+ …$3.99

Comments: They have my interest with the cliffhanger for the last issue. Now to see where they go with it.

DAZZLER #1 FACSIMILE EDITION

(Spider-Man/Peter Parker)

TOM DEFALCO (W) • JOHN ROMITA JR. • BOB LARKIN (CA)

She’s a singer, not a fighter — but Dazzler was always destined to be one of comics’ brightest stars! Journey back to the days of disco to join Spider-Man, the Avengers and the X-Men in welcoming Alison Blaire to the Mighty Marvel firmament with this impeccable facsimile of the first issue of Dazzler’s sparkling solo series! CAPTAIN MARVEL #2

(Spider-Woman)

KELLY THOMPSON (W) • CARMEN CARNERO (A) • AMANDA CONNER & PAUL MOUNTS (CA)

Variant Cover by CHRIS BACHALO WRAPAROUND Design Variant Cover by CARMEN CARNERO Movie Variant Cover Also Available

REVOLUTION!

The classic Fantastic Four villain MAHKIZMO has taken over Manhattan’s Roosevelt Island and turned it into an apocalyptic wasteland! When CAPTAIN MARVEL ends up trapped there and cut off from the rest of world (including any Avengers-shaped reinforcements!), she’ll need to build her own team out of allies, old and new — SPIDER-WOMAN, HAZMAT, ECHO and a man known only as SOM — in order to start a revolution to free the island’s civilian inhabitants. With that kind of backup, Mahkizmo should be toast — but not everything is what it seems on this island…

32 PGS./Rated T+ …$3.99

Comments: I enjoyed the first issue of Thompson’s CapMarv run. Not love, not hate, just enjoyed. But for an A-list book that Marvel is insisting is popular, it has to be more than just enjoyable in order to make a Captain Marvel book the success they want to artificially make it.

THE UNBEATABLE SQUIRREL GIRL #41

RYAN NORTH (W) • NAOMI FRANQUIZ (A) • ERICA HENDERSON (CA)

• In the past months, Squirrel Girl has battled Kraven, rescued NYC from supernatural silence, kinda-maybe died and also fought Skrulls! So now it’s time for a nice break…which is why in THIS issue, Squirrel Girl does nothing but watch public domain movies on television! • That’s right! She just sits there! You can kinda see the TV screen over her shoulder in a couple of panels, but that’s it! It’s really quiet and relaxing and nothing much happens. • … • …THAT IS, UNTIL NANCY WHITEHEAD AND ANOTHER ESU STUDENT BY THE NAME OF PETER PARKER ARE TAKEN HOSTAGE BY A SUPER VILLAIN INTENT ON PROVING THAT SHE’S THE SMARTEST PERSON ON THE PLANET! • Then it’s super hero battles featuring THOR and SHE-HULK on a DATE! SQUIRREL GIRL matching wits against MS. QUIZZLER! And MORE! • Artist Naomi Franquiz makes her MARVEL DEBUT in a stanalone adventure you won’t want to miss!

32 PGS./Rated T …$3.99

Comments: Just not a fan of this book. It’s been going on way longer than I thought it would, and I’ll give it that.

  1. @hornacek: Maybe you were thinking about the paperback versions, which have been stopped. The second image seems to be a variant version for comic shops. Outside of those comic shop variants, they all look like the version in the first image, as far as I know.

  2. @Adam: I thought I heard they stopped making them. Are they in the Marvel Masterwork format like all the rest? i.e. the second “Marvel Masterwork” picture in this article? The one with “MASTERWORKS” spanning the entire book width?

  3. “MARVEL MASTERWORKS: THE SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN VOL. 2 HC”

Wait – are they making Masterworks again? I thought this line of collections stopped years ago.
