The Best Spider-Man Games You Can Play Today

With decades of games consoles to work with, and the incredible development of mobile phones from basically house bricks with an antenna to their super-sleek modern form, it’s little surprise that there has been some rather weird and wonderful Spider-Man games released down the years.

From 8-bit adventures on the Sega MegaDrive to the latest 3D adventures, Spidey fans have a huge back catalogue to enjoy.

Here are just some of the highlights of Spider-Man’s gaming career.

Spider-Man

To coincide with the release of the 2002 movie starring Tobey Maguire and Willem Dafoe, Activision released this epic adventure that saw Spidey battling the Green Goblin, Scorpion and Shocker, amongst others.

Maguire and Dafoe lent their voice talents to the title, which offered a number of cool touches during the main game and after you had completed it, including being able to play as Harry Osborn gliding around an open-world Manhattan.

You can still get your hands on Spider-Man: The Movie for PS2 and the original Xbox from retailers like Amazon, who are currently retailing this high-flying game at around $18.

Spider-Man: Web of Shadows

There is a case to be made that this is the finest Spider-Man game to ever hit third generation consoles.

It’s your classic adventure, with Spidey teaming up with an array of Marvel heroes, including Wolverine and Luke Cage, to bring down Venom and his dastardly team of sidekicks.

But it was the first title to really tap into the modern phenomenon of gamer choice and autonomy. You could choose between romancing Mary Jane or the Black Cat, decide which costume to wear, and much more.

Spider-Man: Web of Shadows undoubtedly set the tone for the next generation of Marvel console games.

Spider-Man Slots

Now it’s time for something a little bit different…

Spidey, like many of the Marvel Comics heroes, has become a star of the reels in a series of slot games, and the latest release from Playtech – simply entitled Spider-Man – is the best yet.

The Green Goblin is on the loose and threatening the safety of Mary Jane as well as the liberty of New York City. Your job is to save the day, and you can win some handsome cash prizes along the way whilst going so.

A number of slots and casino sites have the Spider-Man game in their library, and sites like RealMoney CA offer an in-depth list of online casinos and the array of bonuses and promotions that they offer new players.

Spider-Man Unlimited

As the technological capabilities of smartphones and tablets have improved, so too has the quality of games players are able to enjoy on their devices.

In Spider-Man Unlimited, which is still available on iOS and Android completely free of charge, you can play as more than 200 characters from the Spider-Verse, and power your way across seven different environments to take down the evil ‘Sinister Six’.

This, and Spider-Man Slots, are the most fun Spidey aficionados can have on their mobile.

Spider-Man

The latest addition to the family was this release from Insomniac Games, which hit the shelves exclusively for PS4 players in September 2018.

Gamers take on the roles of both Spidey and Peter Parker in an open-world adventure where you can take down Mr Negative or simply traverse the sublime representation of New York that Insomniac have created.

Available for $59.99 from the PS Store, there is a whole suite of additional downloadable content that will keep Spidey fans engaged for weeks on end.

Ultimate Spider-Man

To further the success that they enjoyed in their early iterations of the franchise, developer Treyarch Games built on the success of Spider-Man and the imaginatively-titled Spider-Man 2 with this third spoke on the wheel.

This was a somewhat darker take on the story, with Spidey battling his enemies in a dingy and murkier version of NYC than typically portrayed on the small screen.

But the visuals were comic book-esque, thanks largely to bringing artist Mark Bagley on board, and so Peter Parker’s duel with Venom looked like it had come straight from the pages of a Marvel release.

Ultimate Spider-Man is super-fun to play, and boasts arresting aesthetics to match.

Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3

For a while, the classic trope in gaming was for beat-em-up’s in the style of Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat.

The creative minds behind Marvel ad Capcom got their heads together and decided that the various characters they handled would also benefit from being shoe-horned into such an environment…not that this was a cynical cash-in, of course.

And so Spidey found himself in the arena, power bar in tow, as he battled a range of adversaries that included Street Fighter legend Chun Li, Dante, Amaterasu and more.

It was a strange landscape to see Spider-Man in, and to be frank this franchise of games did little to expand on the world of our hero or his Marvel counterparts in this largely pointless offering.
