This is a good example of how Mantlo and Hannigan copied Frank Miller’s Daredevil, which itself copied Will Eisner’s The Spirit.
As soon as I saw this panel I thought “I bet this is the Spec issue where the cover has this big closeup of Jonah where he’s about to kiss Marla with a cigar in his mouth.”
