Marvel Comics is Moving to California; Stephen Wacker Becomes EIC

Hope you’re sitting down, Spider-Man fans, because it’s been announced that Marvel Comics will be leaving New York City and moving to Burbank, California. And while that announcement itself is pretty big, this news is coupled with the fact that former Spider-Man editor, Stephen Wacker, was announced as the company’s new Editor-in-Chief. Now former EIC, C.B. Cebulski, will be moving to Japan and be in charge of Marvel’s Manga ventures, and other similar interests.

For more details, including the memo Marvel sent out to its staff, I urge you to check out the Hollywood Reporter’s article on the matter, which you can read here:

  1. Uh-oh.

I began listening to the Crawlspace shortly before Wacker began editing the Spider-Man books with that combative style, and that really odd attitude that suggested to me that he didn’t see comic readers as customers, he saw them as -employees.- Not the valued kind of employees, either. I think he saw the kind of employees who would not only take whatever nonsense that a very bad employer might dish out, employees who be expected to only say, “Please, may I have some more?”

One might want to be optimistic, and say, “well, years have passed and things have changed.”

That’s true enough. Speaking for myself, I listen to the Crawlspace podcast because I enjoy the company of the podcasters. While I have bought and read comics and manga when a story might catch my eye, I haven’t bought a -new- Marvel comic in years; I’ve only bought and read reprint collections of Marvel comics originally published in the last century. (Really gotta finish that Simonson _Thor_ run one of these days. I’ve had copies of the books for years!)

  2. This might be a good time for the Crawlspace to repost the earlier interviews with Wacker.
