Is Peter Ready To Be Spider-Man Once More?

After a battle between Ben and Doctor Octopus, leaving NYC devastated and Ben Reilly’s future uncertain, is Peter ready to be Spider-Man once more, only Captain America and Black Cat can know for sure.

It begins in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #85 by writer Cody Ziglar and artist Paco Medina. It’s going to take everything for Ben Reilly—and the company that backs him—to stop Otto Octavius. But, in the Merry Marvel fashion (and as with all respectable Spider-Stories), even if Spider-Man wins, he is going to lose. And he is going to lose BIG.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #86 by writer Zeb Wells and artist Michael Dowling will deal with the aftermath of the fight and will be a comic that fans will remember for years to come. Ben Reilly has been shaken to the core, and you will be too.

And find out if Peter Parker can step up and be Spider-Man again in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #87 by writer Jed MacKay and artist Carlos Gómez. With NYC reeling from Doc Ock’s attack and Ben Reilly possibly down, it’s up to Captain America and Black Cat to see if Peter Parker is ready for action again. You may think you know where this story is going, but you do not.

  1. @Mohammed — Oops, sorry — I didn’t mean to throw you under the bus. Marvel has a team of proofreaders, presumably, so that would be a bit more confusing.

  2. @Evan
    Actually that was me, oops
I spelt devastated wrong. Thanks for catching it.
Too dependent on spell-checker these days.

  3. “You may think you know where this story is going, but you do not.”
Actually I don’t even need to think, I’ll just wait for the solicit of next issue and you will tell me, Marvel…

Beside that, I like the cover for ASM 86.

  4. Here are my thoughts, going by the solicit quotes:

The solicit for issue #85 of “The Amazing Spider-Man” is: “Is Peter ready to be Spider-Man once more?” We’ll see what Marvel does with this. I don’t expect Peter to go back to the suit this early, but it wouldn’t surprise me if he did. To fans, are we ready to see Peter back as Spider-Man? YES. He never should’ve been replaced, and in such a cringe-inducing way, to begin with, and it just happened in the previous issue. We haven’t even seen clone Ben30 or whatever Reilly take over in Peter’s place and already I want the real Peter Parker back in his own book again, especially since he hasn’t been the focus of his comic for a few months now due to Kindred, “Sinister War”, Mephisto and Doctor Strange taking away the focus.

So they say issue #86 “will be a comic that fans will remember for years to come.” I think the appropriate question to that would be, “will it be remembered in a good way or a bad way?” None of Spider-Man’s recent stories have been remembered fondly by fans years after they happened. Remember Marvel boasting they “proudly present” One Moment In Time? Who talks fondly about that tale whose last name isn’t Quesada?

In regards to issue #87’s quote, “You may think you know where this story is going, but you do not.”, I don’t think the folks at Marvel knows where this story is going, to be honest, and they just started telling it! I would like for the story to go in the direction of Peter and Mary Jane getting engaged and re-marrying, but nearly 14 years after the universally-panned “One More Day”, I am not holding my breath. Marvel seems to be doing everything they can to keep the Mephisto deal intact and it’s not making a lot of fans happy by keeping their marriage retconned.

As a side note, I wish it was Daredevil in place of Captain America on that cover. Having Daredevil forget who Peter is and taking away the Spider-Man/Daredevil close friendship still makes me groan.

If “Beyond” turns out to be a mere 12-issue nothing burger with Peter going back to the costume as Spider-Man again in issue #87, then what would have been the point of Ben’s return, his terrible new costume, and the “Beyond” story as a whole? So far, the only cool thing to come out of this so far is seeing Doctor Octopus back in his Armani suit look from the ’90s on the solicitation covers.

I hope we get to see a writer back on the title that cares about the characters and expands on the Peter/Mary Jane relationship in a positive way. Where are J.M. DeMatteis, Matt Fraction and David Michelinie on the main book when you need them?

Thanks for reading my nonsense. I hope you all have a great night and stay safe, Web-heads.

  5. So beyond will last less than 10 issues… Sight. Looks like it’s gonna be filler before the main event like back in black was.
