Marvel mainstay AL EWING, who himself has just ended a character-redefining run on IMMORTAL HULK, is being joined by RAM V, a horror maestro all his own, to craft a mind-bending and gut-wrenching tale of symbiosis the likes of which the Marvel Universe has never seen! AS IF THAT WASN’T ENOUGH, they’ve been joined by industry legend BRYAN HITCH, who is leaving IT ALL ON THE PAGE! We haven’t led you astray yet, have we? So trust us when we tell you that you have NEVER seen a VENOM like this!

TORN APART!

PROS:

  • We have seen Eddie and Dylan survive many life-or-death situations in the past already, but now the father and son are facing a new kind of issue…. A more personal kind of problem. Now that Eddie is acting as a full-time King, and even a god in Dylan’s terms, that means he is far away from his son, literally and figuratively. And it’s definitely not easy having your dad, who has already been gone most of your life, to be so distant when you need him the most. And it really shows in Dylan’s life, and in his school. The creative team is able to portray the anger, frustration, and fear that the young boy is experiencing, as everything is already reaching its boiling point.
  • On the other hand, it is pretty awesome seeing Eddie as the King, as a god, as a brave, heroic leader trying to clear up the name of symbiotes all across the universe. At the end of the issue, we truly see as readers how intergalactic and universal this series and adventure will be, as Eddie literally finds himself in the furthest part of everything that is. And you can bet that is pretty far.
  • Connected to the last point, the writing is effective in the sense that it immediately gives readers a huge taste of what is to come, all the threats and dangers that the Brock family will be desperately trying to survive in the next issues and arcs. The foreshadowing is pretty blatant and not subtle at all, but such a violent look into the future fits the vibe and aura of Venom quite well, anyway.
  • The art is a perfect fit for a Venom book. The rage, the action, the emotion is clearly and effectively illustrated in this first debut issue, and I can’t wait to see the future clashes this team has in store for us.
  • The first issue was worth every penny, and the extra-length worked out, as we were treated to more story and more action in every panel. Meaty, juicy issue, indeed!
  • Dylan is so blessed with such a cute cat like that… where can we get one of those???

CONS:

  • Still experiencing fear of missing out since it will be a while before I get to watch the new Venom movie, on my side of the world.

FINAL GRADE: A

There is so much to unpack and unravel in this first issue alone, and I trust that the creative team has so much in store for readers, new and long-time alike. The Eddie and Dylan dynamic is a beautiful relationship that has so much potential for drama and heart-warming moments, and I am definitely grabbing the second issue when it releases. 1. I agree.
I enjoyed this issue and it’s very promising of things to come. I like when Ewing writes of cosmic stuffs.
We’ll see how Ram V measures on the horror front, since I don’t know him as an author.
About characterization and use of the status quo, I feel they pushed all the right buttons.
Is it me or does Sleeper resemble more of a cat than before? I preferred his earlier design. It had something of egyptian.
