The Chi-Town Breakdown: ASM #78 BEY

Amen to that caption, Ben.  First there was HU during Spencer’s “Hunted” storyline.  Then came the LR during the “Last Remains” followed by annuals from Chameleon Conspiracy which then lead to Sinister War mini’s.  Marvel isn’t done yet though! It’s BEY- ond your understanding and mine on WHY they want to do these spin offs.  Simple answer…more money.  Main question is, is it essential and important to the storyline?  I’ll let you know Crawlspacers, for we read these books so you don’t have too!  Time to give you, my two cents..right here, on the Spider-Man Crawlspace.

Alford’s Notes and Read’s Reads

Story:  Ben learns to still be aware of his surroundings despite having a spider sense thanks to Colleen’s training exercises.  Misty and Colleen take a beyond assignment to stop a robot monster that the Beyond Corp is calling “Obsidian Star”. Driving around in a exceptional cool looking car, the Daughter’s of the Dragon manage to encage the monster in a pocket Sim that simulates The Avengers Murder Mansion.  Turns out something went wrong and the power source inside the monster used the Sim, so instead of encaging it, it actually evolved into it, trapping our heroines inside.  The ladies use a Beyond Corporation “Do Not Use Under ANY Circumstance” antimatter bomb to get out of this particular circumstance they were stuck in.  When Maxine Danger asks about the power source that controlled the monster, hey simply state that there was no power source and definitely did not give it to Monica Rambo.

The Breakdown

The Daughter’s of the Dragon:  Jed writes a good dynamic between Misty Knight and Colleen Wing.  It reminds me of the buddy cop films of the 80/90’s.  Misty handles things in the more experience manner while Colleen reminds Misty and the readers on how crazy fun she can be.  Her love for horror films plays a tribute while she drags Misty through this realistic fandom inspired nightmare.  I think Colleen is exactly the type of girl that Randy Meeks from Scream would actually want a relationship with, given their love for horror films.  Another one that Jed makes us very clear to watch out for is Maxine Danger.  I’ve heard of the phrase “Danger is my middle name”, but Maxine basically says “Screw you!  I’m basically putting Maximum Danger right on by business card!”  She offers the usual PR stunt to look like she cares for the general public, but we all know she’s mostly in it for some kind of profit and power.  She gets irritated when the “Daughters” see right past that.  All and all this gal-pal team up works well together.  The fighting and humor are top notch and they are basically on the same page and speaking of things being on the same page, how about this phrase that seems to come up ever so often in this comic.

Push Pin Spider-Man:  Yep, pretty much.  It fits well in the comic story line, but you can’t help but imagine WHAT Jed maybe was implying when three main characters state “This Sucks”.  This is a Spider-Man comic and Spidey is only in it for about a 1/3 of the comic.  It’s not even Spidey, it’s his CLONE!  Yes, it’s a BEY comic, but the word SPIDER-MAN is in the title and the “Daughter’s” are not really true supporting characters of Spider-Man, they only became recently with Ben, not Peter.  Remember when Ben joined the New Warriors back in the 90’s?  This is like NW 2.0 and now that he’s “Spider-Man” he’s calling in a couple of favors.  So yeah, this sucks.  It seems like a hard push to get you buy Daughters of the Dragon: Deep Cuts at your LCS, Nick Lowe might as well push that in the end of this iss…oh..he did.  Great minds think a like, I guess.   The only thing that this confirms is that Misty and Colleen are working close with Monica Rambo aka Photon, in order to discover the hidden scheming secrets behind the Beyond Corporation.  Instead of Charlie’s Angels it’s Ben’s Angels, now THAT’S in your head.

Nitpicks

  • I don’t know much about the character, but damn Colleen’s hair is LONG.  I mean is it because of how Carlini draws her or she actually in a race with Medusa from the Inhumans?  It’s almost past her butt!
  • So is the simulation around where the Robot attacked?  I asking…cause Dark Mark wants to know.
  • Murder Mansion I goggled it and that’s all I got.  You want specifics on boring stuff, Alford’s Notes is just down the hall to the left.

Grade:  D, for Don’t even bother.  Look if you are looking for a great dynamic between Misty Knight and Colleen Wing, this is a GOOD BOOK to read and IS enjoyable.  HOWEVER, if you are looking for anything the relates to SPIDER-MAN or Ben, this is a hard pass and you won’t miss much (or anything) from the core ASM story line if you don’t read this.  Even though it’s a good read and the art is good too, I found myself FORCED to read a book because it has The Amazing Spider-Man title on it and it doesn’t really focus on Peter or Ben.   Or core supporting characters like May, Mary Jane, Janice, or Black Cat.  The book is about Misty and Colleen and how they work together, that’s why it’s gets a passing grade.  I would give it a C just to pass, but my job is reviewing Spider-Man books and in my opinion, this has nothing to do with Spider-Man.  Which is why, NO MATTER how well it’s written and illustrated.. “IT SUCKS”.    I kinda want my money back, I ordered a Big Mac and got a Crispy Chicken Sandwich instead.  Nothing against the Chicken Sandwich, it’s good, but I Didn’t order or want that.

Fret not though folk, for Dark Mark has next issue and then we pull a Team Up on Dec 1st.  Unless delays in shipping happens.

Oh and incase you haven’t heard, there’s a New Iron Man Jr No Way Home trailer that arrived yesterday, where Peter laughs at the name “Otto Octavius” but takes the name “Happy Hogan” much more seriously.  🙄

  1. I guess the .bey issues are thought to delve more into secondary characters from the ongoing story in the main book. Unfortunately, the only two important points in this one (Ben’s training on the spider-sense and the Daughters collaboration with Rambeau) could have just been inserted without efforts in the main title as a couple of panels. Actually, that’s exactly what they did with the latter. I agree, the rest is a commercial.
Let’s just hope next ones will be more interesting and story-related.

  2. Gotta agree. This was basically bait and switch. There was more spiderman in this week shang chi for crying out loud!

  3. This whole Beyond arc is frustrating because, like you, I want to review Peter Parker Spider-Man. I didn’t feel this frustration with Slott’s Superior Spider-Man, but I think that was because his Peter Parker was so asinine that I enjoyed the break from it! But we just got Peter back and now this gets thrown in, well, it’s unfair to the Ben character and the Daughters because they seem like good characters to read – just not in my ASM.

If this were a Daughters book, I would keep reading it on Marvel Unlimited and enjoy it, but the only reason I paid for it is because it just keeps coming with my Comixology subscription. I only pay for two books to read as it comes out on the newsstand (figuratively speaking of course), and those are ASM and Moon Knight. Lately, I’ve been wanting to read the Moon Knight first – and that’s a shame. I don’t care how much I’m enjoying Moon Knight, I shouldn’t want to read it over my main hero.

“I think of this Beyond arc like a baseball game.” Truer words have never been spoken. Both just seem to drag on…. Now hockey – THERE’S A SPORT! GO CANES!

  4. I actually don’t think Marvel is pushing a separate book to create awareness of the Daughters intentionally. If they get high praise for these characters, they do imply where to find “more fun with them.”. However, I’m more instated that they are IMPLYING for you to buy that other book and it’s a “clever” way to introduce these characters to new readers via Spider-Man introduction. I’m 80 percent cure that they are using this to sell another book.

I think of this Beyond arc like a baseball game. Ben is the starting pitcher. Christy and Colleen are are in the bullpen as relieve pitchers. They are not even on the field! It feels like this story is how Beyond acquired them for their bullpen more than them coming in to relieve Ben after 7 innings.

If this book was more Ben with the Daughters THROUGHOUT the WHOLE book, then my grade would be much higher.

  5. @Chi-Town — As you said, you read them so we don’t have to. Thank you for that! It couldn’t be any clearer that Marvel is just using the Amazing Spider-man title to push a separate book. I’m glad that that was reflected in your review. I guess that’s not really getting by anyone. Remember when they did that by simply having a single arc go across multiple titles? At least then they were all actually Spider-man titles with Spider-man stories.
