Andrew Garfield comments on potentially gay Spider-Man

andrew-garfield-spider-man-stunts-in-midtown In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Andrew Garfield reveals that in a discussion with producer Matt Tolmach, the possibility of Mary Jane being male came up.

” “I was kind of joking, but kind of not joking about MJ,” he tells EW. “And I was like, ‘What if MJ is a dude?’ Why can’t we discover that Peter is exploring his sexuality?  It’s hardly even groundbreaking!…So why can’t he be gay? Why can’t he be into boys?””

The issue of EW drops June 11th.

  1. @22 What’s EWWWW about it? Does homosexuality make you uncomfortable? This is 2013. It’s one thing to disagree with Garfield about Spidey being gay, it’s another to be homophobic.

  2. My husband will never let me live this one down….he is always Spider-man is gay for running around it tight pants/spandex.

  3. It wasn’t a reckless or dangerous thing to say, he was just saying “what if?” It like’s one of Peter’s “would you rather” questions on Family Guy – just throwing out a hypothetical. Everyone calm down.

  4. I believe that is a very foolish thing for Mr. Garfield to say. I’m all for equality as much as the next guy but not at the expense of changing things up just for the sake of it. Luckily, fellow fans, that is not going to happen. If, in the off chance it did come to pass, then I will no longer be buying Marvel’s comics. Not out of bigotry, but changing things just for the sake of it.

  5. Well, my wife has always questioned Mr. Garfield’s orientation…”suggesting he is playing on the same”…now this will just add fuel to her fire.

    Sigh.

  6. For as much as I’ve defended Garfield’s version of Spider-man, I really do hope he’s kidding about this. I have nothing against homosexuality, but this would be such a drastic change to the mythos that even I couldn’t support it.

  7. We recorded the podcast on Saturday. I’ve been working with a new sponsor to get an ad written up for the front of it before I release them. One or two will be out this weekend.

  8. I haven’t read the article but I’m pretty sure he is just speaking hypothetically, like “wouldn’t it be different if …?”

Besides, I doubt if Garfield has very much pull in the movie decisions.

  9. Why? Can we please stop trying to force changes to beloved icons for the sake of being hip or tying to push some kind of agenda? At least Miles was an original character regardless of his Spider Man Persona. This is an awful idea.

  10. When are the next podcast episodes coming out i can’t wait to hear the panels thought on this one especially J.r podcast 233 was the best

  11. So why can’t we just make an actual gay hero and leave the straight ones alone.

  12. “Potentially Gay Super-Hero”?
Will he team up with the Ambigously
    Gay Super-Heroes”?

  13. “The issue of EW drops June 11th”

Welp. Looks like we’ll have to time-travel back to the past to get it. 😛

  14. @9 Fair enough. I was just voicing my opinion while goofing off a bit, sorry if it offended you. However @8 has a great point, I’m sure Quesada is dancing in the streets at the thought of this idea. After all, if it were the 90s they could make a foil cover, a flip book with holo-disk and maybe even a variant using actual spider blood in the ink to celebrate Spidey’s coming out.

  15. @3 – Quesada would love this. “Baby May? She never existed, Mary Jane was a dude and dude’s can’t get pregnant. So there never was a Baby May.”

  16. @4 Indeed it is. I was posting my thoughts on a “potentially gay Spider-Man”. I was even having some fun of my own, with the pregnancy comment in my final sentence. God.

  17. JR now has brick-marks on his forehead from the wall where he is slamming his head repeatedly.

  18. I suspect Garfield listens to the Crawl Space podcasts and said this only to get a reaction of out George.

  19. While I can understand the desire for a gay super-hero, I do not understand the need or want to change a character that has been straight since his creation to suddenly be gay. “Why can’t MJ be a dude?” Well, I don’t know many guys named Mary Jane… and how’s he supposed to get pregnant?
