September 2016 Spider-Solicitations

Here comes September 2016 and with it comes Civil War, cancelled books and a lot of Miles Morales.

CIVIL WAR 6

CIVIL WAR II #6 (OF 7)
BRIAN MICHAEL BENDIS (W) • DAVID MARQUEZ (A)
Cover by MARKO DJURDJEVIC
Variant Cover by Michael Cho
OLD MAN LOGAN VARIANT BY PHIL NOTO
B&W VIRGIN CONNECTING VARIANT G COVER BY KIM JONG GI
Sides have been drawn, battles have been fought, but it all comes down to this. Captain Marvel versus Iron Man over the future of the Marvel Universe, one of the biggest battles in Marvel history!
40 PGS./Rated T+ …$4.99

Comments: This series has been a pleasant surprise so far, but Bendis does have a tendency to start stories interesting and lose it somewhere along the way (see AvX). However, that’s not going to stop me from remaining cautiously optimistic for this year’s unusually personal event.

More after the break.

CIVIL WAR ASM

CIVIL WAR: AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #4 (of 4)
CHRISTOS GAGE (W) • TRAVEL VARIANT COVER BY SIMONE BIANCHI
• The effects of Ulysses’ prediction are felt as CLASH ATTACKS SPIDER-MAN!
32 PGS./Rated T+ …$3.99

Comments: Unlike most people, I actually kinda liked Clayton Cole’s debut story so I am curious to see what they do with him. Having Gage at the helm rather than Slott means that this series might have a bit more promise than you’d expect from an event tie-in.

CIVIL WAR KINGPIN

CIVIL WAR II: KINGPIN #3 (of 4)

Matthew Rosenberg (W) • Ricardo LÓpez Ortiz (A)
VARIANT COVER BY TBA
• Wilson Fisk has reason to believe that one of his own men is staging a coup—and killing those who won’t surrender their loyalty.
• But mutiny becomes the least of Fisk’s worries when the Punisher launches an attack on the Kingpin’s safe house.
• Can the Fisk keep his business afloat with his cronies dropping like flies, and Frank Castle gunning for him, or is this finally the end of the reign of the KINGPIN?
32 PGS./Rated T+ …$3.99

Comments: Punisher vs Kingpin. Good to see Marvel isn’t out of ideas.

ALL NEW ALL DIFFERENT AVENGERS 1

ALL-NEW, ALL-DIFFERENT AVENGERS #14

COVER BY ALEX ROSS
PROSTATE AWARENESS MONTH VARIANT COVER BY Mike McKone
CIVIL WAR II TIE-IN!
• Spotlight on the All-New Wasp as she finds her loyalties torn by the war—and seeks guidance in the most unexpected place.
32 PGS./Rated T+ …$3.99

Comments: This series has so far danced around in quality from issue to issue, never quite sure which direction it’s going in. Personally, I think the new Wasp has done nothing to help this. Once again, this has taken the series in a direction that I’m not entirely sure is right for it at this early stage.

SQUADRON SUPREME

SQUADRON SUPREME #11
JAMES ROBINSON (W) • LEONARD KI by ALEX GARNER
CIVIong>• Thanks to the predictions of Ulysses, Warrior Woman now intends to resurrect Namor no matter the risk. To this end, she needs Reed Richards’ time machine, locked away in the Baxter Building…
• …And the Squadron Supreme and their new ally, the real Power Princess, will risk everything to stop her.
• Even if it means facing the current owner of the Baxter Building…Spider-Man!
• Meanwhile, Nighthawk remains missing—looking for information on Ulysses and the Civil War raging around them. The first step to a major event in the future of the Squadron!
32 PGS./Rated T+ …$3.99

Comments: Don’t really know the Squadron Supreme but apparently we have to have at least one Spider-Man in every book at some point, so here we go!

SPIDER WOMAN

SPIDER-WOMAN #11
DENNIS HOPELESS (W) • JAVIER RODRIGUEZ (A/C)
CIVIL WAR II TIE-IN!
• After the [REDACTED] in Civil War II, Jessica Drew has no choice but to put on her private investigator gloves and enter the fray.
• But with a baby at home, Jessica has to tread more carefully than ever…
32 PGS./Rated T+ …$3.99

Comments: Hopeless and Rodriguez have provided us with a great take on Jessica Drew in this book and I recommend that you pick this up!

MILES

SPIDER-MAN #8
BRIAN MICHAEL BENDIS (W) • NICO LEON (A)
Cover by SARA PICHELLI

• Ulysses’ latest prediction has the whole Marvel Universe on Miles’ tail
• Escape is out of the question, but survival might be, too.
32 PGS./Rated T …$3.99

Comments: I’m starting to get worried that if this event devolves into ‘let’s hunt this hero’, it’ll quickly turn everyone against Captain Marvel. In my opinion, story-lines with heroes fighting each other need a balanced argument otherwise I quickly lose interest. On the plus side – Miles vs Venom!

SPIDER-MAN 2099

SPIDER-MAN 2099 #15
PETER DAVID (W) • WILL SLINEY (A)
Cover by FRANCESCO MATTINA
CIVIL WAR II TIE-IN!
• MIGUEL and his allies race the clock to save CAPTAIN AMERICA from certain doom.
• But the mysterious new CEO of ALCHEMAX has called in S.H.I.E.L.D. to put an end to the super power problem for good.
• Outnumbered. Outgunned. Can Spidey find his friend and get back to the present when the entire world is against him?
32 PGS./Rated T …$3.99

Comments: I wasn’t really a big fan of the second run of Spidey 2099, so I have yet to give this one a go. My enthusiasm for the 2099 universe sadly faded away with Secret Wars 2099.

GWENPOOL

GWENPOOL #6
CHRIS HASTINGS (W) • GURIHIRU (A)
Cover by STACEY LEE
COSPLAY VARIANT COVER AVAILABLE
• Gwen’s “team-up” with Miles Morales ends…badly!
• Man, oh, man, she is not a good person! It gets dark!
• We promise this is not a Civil War II tie-in!
32 PGS./Rated T+ …$3.99

ROCKET AND GROOT

ROCKET RACCOON & GROOT #9 & 10
NICK KOCHER (W) • Michael Walsh (A)
CoverS by DAVID LOPEZ
CIVIL WAR II e don’t mean to be carpet-braggers, but you’ll have to are the best issues of the entire event!
• When Rocket, Groot, and Gwenpool all go after the same bounty in Georgia, the results are antebellum-believable!
• Get-tysburg as many copies as you can!
32 PGS. (each)/Rated T …$3.99 (each)

Comments: Don’t hate me for this, but I kinda like Gwenpool now. Despite her just being there to cash in on Gwen Stacey and Deadpool, the first few issues have been fun to read. Seeing her team up with Rocket and Groot will be a delight.

VENOM

VENOM: SPACE KNIGHT #12
ROBBIE THOMPSON (W) • GERARDO SANDOVAL (A)
Cover by ZACH HOWARD
CIVIL WAR II TIE-IN!
• In his fight with Flash, Spidey held all the cards—will the symbiote take back the advantage by TAKING OVER Spider-Man?

• And while Flash’s duty to the GUARDIANS brought him to Earth—he won’t forget his responsibility to old teammates.
32 PGS./Rated T+ …$3.99

Comments: Does anyone really care what Spidey’s ‘BIGGEST’ secret’ is?

CIVIL WAR II TIE-IN!
• It’s the Winter Soldier versus Spider-Man and only one of them is going to walk away.

Comments: Jeez, Miles Morales is everywhere this month.

NOVA

• Sam Alexander has led a busy life as NOVA, but after all of his intergalactic gallivanting, is it time to hang up the helmet?
32 PGS./Rated T …$3.99

ASM

• THE MOMENT YOU’VE BEEN WAITING FOR HAS COME!
• Doc Ock has been trapped in the body of The Living Brain since the first issue, but now it’s time for him to act!
32 PGS./Rated T …$3.99

Comments: Isn’t it called ‘The Clone Conspiracy’ now? Also, how shocking is is that Parker Industries has YET ANOTHER TRAITOR? You’d think he’d have a better policy for hiring – you know, not employing the ex-super villain who was rewired by the man who killed him!

SPIDER-MAN DEADPOOL

SPIDER-MAN/DEADPOOL #9
JOE KELLY (W) • ED MCGUINNESS (A/C)
STORY THUS FAR VARIANT COVER BY TBA

SPIDER GWEN

SPIDER-GWEN #12
JASON LATOUR (W) • ROBBI RODRIGUEZ (A/C)
• Here it is! SPIDER-GWEN vs. FRANK CASTLE.
• No more powers, no more running, no more hiding.
32 PGS./Rated T …$3.99

Comments: As much as I love this series, they are really starting to drag out plot lines now. But if anyone can deliver, it’s certainly Latour and Rodriguez.

WEB WARRIORS

WEB-WARRIORS #11

• AN ASTOUNDING ASSEMBLY OF ARACHNIDS ALL IN ONE PLACE FOR YOU TO ENJOY!
• But will all of them survive?!
32 PGS./Rated T+ …$3.99

Comments: Sad to see this series go so soon – it’s one of the best Spider-comics we’ve got on the market. At least it’s going out with a bang, jam-packed with a load of Spiders and even a variant from iZombie’s Mike Allred.

SPIEY

SPIDEY #10
ROBBIE THOMPSON (w) • NATHAN STOCKMAN (a)
Cover by KHARY RANDOLPH
• Spidey versus Captain America!

Comments: Silk in the Negative Zone – count me in!

HOWARD THE DUCK

• Guest-starring Spider-Man, probably.
32 PGS./Rated T+ …$3.99

Comments: How did this get cancelled? It’s pure brilliance! Its satirical humor has made it the highlight of my pull-list for the last year. Do yourself a favor and catch up, before it’s too late…

More: It’s probably also worth noting that the teen member of the Avengers, including Miles, have been seen burning their membership cards on the cover of the Marvel NOW! fall previews. Is this a statement against Civil War or does it show their departure from the team during Marvel’s new revamp? Comment below and let me know what you think.

  1. Consensus is Civil War II has been terrible thus far, you’re in the minority when it comes to being pleasantly surprised by it

…Same with Web Warriors, a lot of people soured on Costa with this book. I like it also, and it’s virtually the only book where can drum up any genuine interest in Spider-Gwen. That character needs bridged.
